Syphilitic aortic aneurysm*

Infection by the spirochaete, Treponema pallidum, leads to a subacute infection, which produces cardiovascular and nervous system complication at the tertiary stage. In the ascending aorta, there is severe inflammation of the vasa vasorum, called mesoaortitis, resulting to weakening of the media. An aneurysm with a tree-bark appearance of the intima develops and may rupture with a fatal outcome.
