Dysplasia refers to disordered, atypical epithelial growth, without a full-blown picture of cancer. In this slide, notice the cervical epithelium is thickened, the cells are hyperchromatic, and the cells are poorly orientated to one another. However, the basement membrane is intact, meaning there is no risk of metastases. Therefore, it is not regarded as a cancerous lesion yet.
