Contusions are pathologically hallmarks of head injury and are important for medicolegal purposes, for which many postmortems of head injuries are performed. They are literally bruises of the cortical surfaces, i.e. when the soft brain is thrown against the sharpy bony prominences on the base of the skull. They are located at the crests of the gyri and the base of the frontal and temporal lobes.
