Biography

Dr Alvin L. Young is the Chief of Service, Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, Prince of Wales and Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospitals and Cluster Coordinator (Ophthalmology), New Territories East Cluster. In terms of subspecialty interest, he is the Coordinator of Corneal & External Eye Disease Service for NTEC.

He has been the Chairman of the Hospital Authority Co-ordinating Committee in Ophthalmology since 2013, and serves as Honorary Clinical Associate Professor of DOVS at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Honorary Visiting Professor of STU-CUHK Joint Shantou International Eye Centre.

Dr Young received his schooling, undergraduate medical education & postgraduate ophthalmic training in Ireland. He was a Lecturer in Ophthalmology at University College Dublin before his return to Hong Kong in the late nineties when he joined this department.

Dr Young has over 100 peer reviewed publications & has delivered well over 200 courses, lectures and presentations at major international ophthalmic scientific meetings. Dr Young has also served as a reviewer for more than 20 peer reviewed journals & as editorial board member of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology. He serves as a Council member of the Asia Cornea Society, The Hong Kong Society of Transplantation & The College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong. He was the recipient of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Distinguished Service Award in 2009, Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Award AND Achievement Award in 2015 & AFV Outstanding Researcher of the Year in Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (1st runner up) in 2003. He has been serving as a Corneal Scientific Program Coordinator for the World Ophthalmology Congress 2008 and APAO Congresses (2009 to 2013 & 2015). He has also served as panel member or chair for the World Cornea Congresses (2000 & 2015), EuCornea & Asia Corneal Society Congresses.


Research interests

Dr. Young’s prime interest is in the clinical aspects of the comprehensive anterior segment. His broad interests ranged from refractive to cornea and lens, including osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis, anterior and posterior lamellar keratoplasty, pterygium, other ocular surface reconstruction and various different modalities of lens replacement.
