Biography

Prof. Lam is Clinical Professor (Honorary) of Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is Life Member of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI) and Council Member of International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), the President and Organizing Committee Chairman of World Ophthalmology Congress 2008 in Hong Kong (over 13,000 delegates from 102 countries), Council Member of the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) and of the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS). He is the Secretary-General and Chief Executive Officer of both Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), and the Asia-Pacific Vitreoretina Society (APVRS), Founding President of the Asia-Pacific Society of Eye Genetics, and the President of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong (2003-5).

Prof. Lam is a serious academician. He was once or is currently editorial board member of various academic journals: Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology (Associate Editor, Asia), British Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, Acta Ophthalmologica, Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology, Chinese Journal of Ocular Fundus Diseases, Video Journal of Ophthalmology, Asia Journal of Ophthalmology, Founding editor-in-chief of the Hong Kong Journal of Ophthalmology; and eye magazines including Ocular Surgery News Europe/Asia-Pacific Edition (Associate Medical Editor and Editorial Board Chairman), EyeNet Magazine, and Euro Times.

He has a passion to help eliminate cataract blindness in China. He found the Project Vision Charitable Foundation (www.projectvision.org.hk) in 2006 aiming to establish 100 charity eye centers in China by 2013 to perform 100,000 quality but low-cost cataract surgeries every year.

A number of awards have been bestowed to him: "De Ocampo Lecture Award" (the highest award for academic achievement in the Asia Pacific Region, conferred by APAO), "Senior Achievement Award" of AAO, "APACRS Certified Educator Award", "Hundred Global Leader for Tomorrow", "Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong the World", "The Most Courteous Doctor, Prince of Wales Hospital", and "Hong Kong Humanity Award", etc. Last but not least, he was elected a member of the National People’s Congress of China in early 2008.


Research interests

  1. Surgical advancements in glaucoma, cataracts, refractive errors, cornea diseases and pediatric eye diseases.

  2. Treatment for macular diseases, especially diabetic macular edema, diabetic retinopathy, chloroidal neovascularization, and age-related macular degeneration.

  3. Ophthalmic epidermiology.

  4. Mechanisms and applications of traditional and alternative medicine for eye diseases.

  5. Translational research in ophthalmic therapeutics.

  6. Genetic mechanisms and pathology of myopia, glaucoma and macular degeneration.
