CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre
Winning the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Award 3 years in a row

CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre has won Reader’s Digest “Trusted Brand” in the Eye Surgery Centre (LASIK) category in Hong Kong for three consecutive years.

Professor Clement Tham, Director of CUHK Eye Centre, said CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre was delighted to have received the award for the third time. He would like to thank all the staff of CUHK Eye Centre for their dedication and contribution as well as members of public for their continued trust and support throughout the year. In the future, CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre will continue to excel in clinical services and research for the benefits of all needy ones in Hong Kong and beyond.

Established in 1996, CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre is one of the major ophthalmic research and treatment centres based in CUHK Eye Centre (CUHKEC) under the supervision of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vishal Sciences, CUHK. CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre is the only one of its kind in Hong Kong that incorporates university-based scientific research, professional training and personalised clinical services into one all-inclusive refractive surgery centre. With an eye to excellence in clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, CUHK Laser Refractive Surgery Centre strives to utilise its research and development efforts effectively and efficiently to provide the best refractive surgery services to the public.

About Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Award

The Reader's Digest Trusted Brands Survey has been conducted for 15 years and is recognized as one of the most representative branding surveys in Asia.

The recent survey was conducted by renowned research firm Ipsos in October 2012 in Asia – Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, India, Philippines and Malaysia. Approximately 7,000 respondents were interviewed by paper mail-outs, phone, face-to-face and online surveys, of which close to 900 were from Hong Kong. Respondents were asked to name their most-trusted brand in a variety of products and services based on 6 factors: Trustworthiness and Credibility, Quality, Value, Understanding of Customer Needs, Innovation and Social Responsibility.

三度榮獲《讀者文摘》信譽品牌獎

香港中文大學激光視力矯正中心今年再創佳績，連續第三年獲《讀者文摘》「信譽品牌」獎。

對於香港中文大學激光視力矯正中心（下簡稱矯視中心）連續第三年獲頒「信譽品牌」，香港中文大學眼科中心總監譚智勇講座教授感到高興。譚教授表示：「能夠得到廣大公眾的信賴，我們要向矯視中心的全體員工致以衷心感激。今後我們會繼續努力，不斷加強科研項目及提升服務水平，務求為每位有需要之市民提供最佳服務，以及最適切和最安全的矯視手術。」

香港中文大學眼科中心隸屬香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系，中心轄下的激光視力矯正中心自1996年成立至今，一直致力激光矯視的臨床及基礎研究，並以培訓專業眼科醫生為己任，成績斐然。同時中心亦為市民提供最個人化的激光視力矯正手術，是全港唯一結合大學科研、培訓與醫療服務的激光視力矯正中心。

關於《讀者文摘》「信譽品牌調查」

《讀者文摘》亞洲「信譽品牌調查」已舉辦了15年，被視為亞洲地區內權威的品牌研究之一。

本年度調查由有名的調查研究機構益普索（Ipsos）於2012年10月進行。調查透過問卷、電話、面對面訪談及網上問卷方式，在亞洲區進行，訪問了來自香港、新加坡、台灣、泰國、印度、菲律賓及馬來西亞總數接近7,000名受訪者，其中接近900名受訪者來自香港。受訪者根據品牌的「可靠及信譽」、「品質」、「價值」、「了解消費者需要」、「創新」及「社會責任」選出最值得信賴之品牌。

New member of the DOVS family – Dr Yam Cheuk-sing Jason

Dr Yam Cheuk-sing Jason joined Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, CUHK as Assistant Professor in February 2013. Dr Yam graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong in 2005. He obtained the Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2010 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS) in 2011. He received overseas training in Paediatric Ophthalmology in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, and Strabismology with Prof David Guyton in Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and with Prof Kenneth Wright in Los Angeles. He received the Best Poster Presentation in 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting Hong Kong. He serves as a Council member of the Asia-Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society. Dr Yam is interested in all aspects of paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, including congenital cataract, retinoblastoma, myopia, paediatric anterior segment disorders, infantile and intermittent exotropia, and restrictive strabismus.

歡迎新成員加入香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系 – 任卓昇醫生

任卓昇醫生於2013年2月加入香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系為助理教授。任醫生在 2005年於香港大學醫學院畢業。其後在2010年取得香港大學公共衛生碩士, 並在2011年取得英國愛丁堡皇家外科醫學院院士。他在英國倫敦Great Ormond Street Hospital接受兒科眼疾專科訓練, 其後在美國巴爾的摩約翰霍普金斯大學接受David Guyton教授的斜視研究訓練, 以及在美國洛杉磯接受Kenneth Wright教授的眼科專科訓練。他曾於2009年在香港舉行科學年度大會會議上 榮獲最佳海報演示獎項。他亦擔任亞太兒科眼疾及斜視協會委員會成員。任醫生主要研究重點在於兒科眼疾及斜視的診斷和治療，包括先天性白內障，視網膜母細胞瘤，深近視，兒童眼前房紊亂、小兒及間歇性外斜視及牽制性斜視。

Professor Clement C.Y. Tham has been elected the new Secretary-General of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO)

Prof Clement C.Y. Tham, the S.H. Ho Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of CUHK, has been elected the new Secretary-General of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) for a term of 4 years (2013 – 2017) at the recent 28th APAO Congress in India in January, 2013.

Established in 1960, the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) (www.apaophth.org) aims at advancing ophthalmic development in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Over 50 years of development, the organisation has become one of the largest supranational ophthalmic organisations, comprising 19 member countries and regions in the Asia-Pacific. In addition to organising the annual international congress to promote educational and scientific activities in ophthalmology and visual sciences, APAO also targets to foster cooperation between ophthalmological societies and institutes, both regionally and internationally. APAO launched its own official peer-reviewed scientific journal, the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology (APJO), in 2012.

Before assuming the position of the Secretary-General of the APAO, Prof Tham was the Deputy Secretary-General of the organisation between 2010 and 2013. He was also the Chair of the APAO Congress Committee and the Scientific Program Committees of the 27th APAO Congress 2012 in Korea, and the 28th APAO Congress 2013 in India. Prof Tham was awarded the inaugural Nakajima Award by the APAO in 2005.

Prof Tham remarked, “I very much look forward to developing channels to allow young future leaders from Hong Kong and other APAO member nations to start contributing to APAO initiatives and committees at an earlier stage.”

譚智勇教授獲選為亞太眼科醫學會秘書長

譚智勇教授 - 現任香港中文大學何善衡眼科及視覺科學講座教授，剛於印度舉行的第二十八屆亞太眼科醫學會國際眼科會議上獲選為亞太眼科醫學會秘書長，任期為四年(2013年至2017年)。

亞太眼科學會(下稱“學會”)於1960年成立(www.apaophth.org)，致力推動亞太區的眼科發展。在過去的50 年，學會已經發展成為世界最大的國際眼科專科組織之一，成員包括在亞太地區內的19個國家和地區的眼科學會和機構。學會除了每年於成員國家或地區舉辦一年一度的國際眼科會議以推廣眼科及視覺科學的教育及科硏活動外，還會促進區內外各個眼科專科機構間之合作。學會更於2012年起定期出版由專家評審的論文雜誌 – 《亞太眼科雜誌》。

譚教授就任學會秘書長前，曾在2010年至2013年期間出任學會副秘書長一職。譚教授亦曾任2012年在韓國舉辦的第二十七屆亞太眼科醫學會國際眼科會議及2013年在印度舉辦的第二十八屆亞太眼科醫學會國際眼科會議的會議委員會及科學策劃委員會主席。早於 2005年，譚教授曾榮獲亞太眼科醫學會的首屆中島獎項。

譚教授表示：「我熱切期待將來有更多發展的渠道，讓來自香港和其他成員國家的年輕領袖早日為亞太眼科醫學會作出重大的貢獻。」

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) Open House 2013

To celebrate the start of the year 2013 and the inauguration of the Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre (AOTEC), the Open House 2013 of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) was held on the 10th January 2013. The event was hosted by Prof Calvin Pang Chi-pui, the Department Chairman; Prof Clement Tham Thee-yung, Director, CUHK Eye Centre; Dr Cheung Kwong-Yu, Hospital Chief Executive, Hong Kong Eye Hospital; Dr Chi Chung-Chai, Deputy Hospital Chief Executive, Hong Kong Eye Hospital, and Dr Alvin Young Lerrmann, Chief of Service, DOVS, PWH and AHML Nethersole Hospital. Over 70 eye doctors from the HA’s Kowloon Central & New Territories East Clusters, and close associates of DOVS, joined the celebrations and ride on this occasion to have a personal touch of the new and latest facilities in AOTEC.

Prof Pang expressed his deepest gratitude to the late Mr Peter Ting Chang Lee, Mrs Nancy Lee and the Lee's family for their generous donation towards the establishment of AOTEC and emphasised that the establishment of AOTEC would definitely help the department accomplish its mission of helping Hong Kong to become the regional hub and centre of excellence in ophthalmic training and education in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Inaugurated on the 8th November 2012, AOTEC was named after the late Mr Lee Wing Kit in recognition of the support from the Lee's family to the University's development. The centre is located on the 4th floor of the Hong Kong Eye Hospital with area of approximately 1,100 sq. m.. It is equipped with state-of-the-art training and education facilities to provide necessary ophthalmic and visual sciences knowledge to both undergraduate medical students and post-graduate research students, as well as to offer basic training to ophthalmic residents. The new facilities in AOTEC include: Advanced Ophthalmic Investigation and Diagnosis Unit, Ocular Imaging Grading and Reading Centre, Ocular Pathology Training Centre, Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre, and Telemedicine Centre.

香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系開放參觀日2013

為慶祝2013年的來臨和利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心的開幕，香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系於2013年1月10日舉行開放參觀日，並由學系主任彭智培教授、香港中文大學眼科中心總監譚智勇教授、香港眼科醫院行政總監張光宇醫生、香港眼科醫院行政副總監池中齊醫生，與及威爾斯親王醫院、大埔雅麗氏何妙齡那打素醫院眼科及視覺科學部門主管楊樂旼醫生共同主持祝賀儀式。逾70名來自醫院管理局九龍中醫院聯網及新界東醫院聯網醫生及與學系好友出席參觀。

彭智培教授衷心感謝利定昌先生伉儷及其家族慷慨資助成立中大利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心，並強調中心的成立將有助香港發展成為亞太區內首屈一指的眼科培訓及教育中心，推動眼科臨床訓練及學術研究的持續發展。

利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心於2012年11月8日開幕。中心位於香港眼科醫院四樓，佔地 1,100平方米，引進了不少先進的眼科設備，並以嶄新的概念推動眼科教學、科學研究及專科臨床培訓的發展。醫科本科學生、研究學生、在職見習醫生和眼科專科醫生可透過中心的高科技儀器和先進的實驗室設施，協助臨床診治和接受多元化的眼科教學和臨床醫療培訓。中心的重點設施包括：高等眼科病理及診斷、眼科影像掃描、評核及檢閱中心、眼科病理培訓中心、眼科顯微手術培訓中心及遠程醫學中心。

The CUHK Ophthalmology Forum 2012 cum HKEH 20^th Anniversary Symposium

More than 30 leading ophthalmologists and visual scientists around the world and from our CUHK Eye Centre lectured on, and discussed, key advancements in major eye diseases and research technologies. Research students presented their research projects for vigorous discussions. There were more than 100 participants from 17 cities in Japan, Korea, India, Singapore, Canada, the United States, and China.

14^th – 17^th December 2012

The 8^th International Symposium of Ophthalmology – Hong Kong (The 8^th ISO-HK)

The 8th ISO-HK was held from December 14 to 16, 2012, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Organized by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK-DOVS) and led by the congress presidents, Prof Dennis Lam (former Chairman of DOVS) and Prof Calvin Pang (current Chairman of DOVS), the 8th ISO-HK was a great success. The 2.5-day congress attracted 780 submissions of abstracts and 1,340 delegates from 39 countries. More than 290 international speakers were invited to give talks in the congress.

The 8th ISO-HK was held in conjunction with the 7th Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society (APVRS) Congress, the Inaugural Congresses of the Asia-Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society (APSPOS) and the Asia-Pacific Society of Ocular Oncology and Pathology (APSOOP), the 10th Asia-Pacific Society of Eye Genetics (APSEG) Symposium, as well as the 24th Annual Scientific Meeting Hong Kong Ophthalmological Symposium, which is jointly organized by the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong (COHK) and the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society (HKOS).

第八屆香港國際眼科博覽會

由香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系籌辦，並由學系前系主任林順潮教授及現任系主任彭智培教授共同主持的第八屆香港國際眼科博覽會已於2012年12月14至16日於香港會議展覽中心順利舉行。兩天半的博覽會吸引了來自39個國家 ，1340名代表出席，並呈交了多達780篇論文摘要。此博覽會亦同時邀請了超過290名國際演講者於博覽會內發表演說。

第八屆香港國際眼科博覽會是與第七屆亞太玻璃體視網膜協會會議(APVRS)、亞太兒科眼疾及斜視協會(APSPOS)和亞太眼部腫瘤及病理學協會(APSOOP)之開幕會議、第十屆亞太眼基因協會會議(APSEG)，以及由香港眼科學院(COHK)和香港眼科學會(HKOS)籌辦之第二十四屆眼科週年硏討會同時舉行。

Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre (OMTC) Basic Microsurgical Workshop

Totally 8 resident doctors from Hong Kong Eye Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital have complted the Ophthalmic Microsurgical Training Centre (OMTC)’s Basic Mirosurgical Workshop held in December 2012 organised by the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS).

As one of the key facilities of the Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre (AOTEC) of DOVS, the OMTC provides state-of-the-art training environment and facilities for general ophthalmologists and ophthalmic trainees. Its aim is to develop surgical proficiency in those who are preparing for various surgical procedures, through lectures and video presentations, virtual reality simulations and wet lab sessions.

The objectives of the OMTC and its Workshops are:

1. Introduction of ophthalmic conditions which require surgical interventions
2. Step-wise learning of various ophthalmic procedures
3. Training of stereoscopic coordination and dexterity under surgical microscopes
4. Management of surgical complications
5. Accreditation of surgeons for ophthalmic surgeries on patients

Informative lecture series and video presentations provide groundwork for specific ophthalmic conditions and their treatment strategies. The OMTC houses the virtual reality system EYESi® Ophthalmosurgical Simulator, which employs advanced computer technology to give the surgeon the feeling that he is experiencing real intraocular surgery. In the wet lab sessions, participants engage in hands-on practice, supervised by course instructors. Step-by-step approach on important intraocular maneuvers on porcine eyes reinforces eye-hand-feet coordination and dexterity.

The coming “Phaco Workshop” will be held in April 2013.

眼科顯微手術培訓中心 – 基礎顯微外科手術工作坊

由香港中文大學眼科及視覺科學學系(下稱中大眼科)眼科顯微手術培訓中心舉辦的基礎眼科顯微外科手術工作坊，已於2012年12月參加並順利完成；期間共有8名香港眼科醫院及沙田威爾斯親王醫院的駐院醫生出席參與。

作為中大眼科利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心的其中一項主要設施，眼科顯微手術培訓中心為眼科醫生及眼科學員提供最先進的設備和合適環境來體驗不同的眼科臨床手術。通過課堂、視頻演示及眼科虛擬手術訓練，讓正準備面對不同眼科手術之醫生和學員們提升手術的技巧和精確度。

工作坊之目標如下:

1. 介紹需要進行眼科外科手術的不同眼部情況
2. 分段學習各類型眼科手術
3. 使用手術顯微鏡作立體協調和靈巧度培訓
4. 學習手術併發症管理
5. 透過模擬練習成績，評審眼科醫生為眼科病人進行手術的水平

通過一系列富資訊性的課堂及視頻演示，令學員對各眼科疾病及治療方向有新的認識，並為他們打下基礎。培訓中心亦採用先進的虛擬訓練系統(EYESi)，結合先進的電腦技術，令學員仿似置身真正的內眼手術。學員亦會運用豬眼作實踐演練，並由課程導師監督，逐步提升學員手眼腳的協調和靈巧。

此外，超微創白內障切除手術工作坊將由於2013年4月舉行。

CUHK Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre Opens Today
Equipped with State-of-the-art Ophthalmic Diagnostic Technologies and Training Facilities

The grand opening of the Lee Wing Kit Advanced Ophthalmic Training and Education Centre (AOTEC) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was held today (8 November). The Ceremony was hosted by Prof Pang Chi Pui Calvin, Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, CUHK, and Prof Tham Cheee Yung Clement, Director of CUHK Eye Centre. Officiating guests included Mrs Nancy Lee; Prof Sung Jao Yiu Joseph, Vice-Chancellor and President, CUHK and Prof Fok Tai Fai, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, CUHK; Dr Leung Pak Yin, Chief Executive, Hospital Authority, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Dr Hung Chi Tim, Cluster Chief Executive, Kowloon Central Cluster, Hospital Authority, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Dr Cheung Kwong Yu, Hospital Chief Executive, Hong Kong Eye Hospital; and Dr Dennis Lam, Honorary Professor of Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, CUHK. AOTEC was named after the late Mr Lee Wing Kit in recognition of the support from the Lee's family to the University's development. Over 130 distinguished guests and members of the University attended the ceremony.

中大利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心今天正式開幕
配備最先進眼科診斷技術及培訓設施

香港中文大學(中大)今天(11月8日)舉行利榮傑高等眼科培訓及教育中心(中心)開幕典禮，典禮由眼科及視覺科學學系系主任彭智培教授及眼科中心總監譚智勇教授主持。主禮嘉賓包括利定昌夫人、中大校長沈祖堯教授、中大醫學院院長霍泰輝教授、醫院管理局行政總裁梁栢賢醫生、醫院管理局九龍中醫院聯網總監熊志添醫生、香港眼科醫院行政總監張光宇醫生，以及中大眼科及視覺科學學系名譽教授林順潮醫生。逾130名嘉賓及大學成員出席典禮，場面熱鬧。中心以利定昌先生之先嚴利榮傑先生尊諱命名，以答謝利先生伉儷的慷慨襄贊。中心的成立亦有賴香港特別行政區政府食物及衛生局、醫院管理局，以及大學教育資助委員會的支持。

The Chinese University of Hong Kong Laser Refractive Surgery Center is very proud to have won the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Gold Award 2011 in the “Eye Surgery Center-Lasik” category. The award ceremony was held on May 24, 2011. Prof. Dennis S.C. Lam, Chairman of Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (DOVS), Dr. Vishal Jhanji, Assistant Professor of DOVS, and Dr. Alex Fan, Assistant Professor DOVS, attended the ceremony to receive the award.

Press Conference: CUHK Discovers Sodium 4-phenylbutyrate as Potential New Glaucoma Drug

The press conference on the potential new glaucoma drug drew about 30 reporters from both broadcast and printed media. The speakers, who are also the investigators of the local research team, explained the scientic breakthrough throughoutly and vigoriously. The team extended the application of the chemical Sodium 4-phenylbutyrate to benefit glaucoma patients, while clinical bedside usage is expected to be carried out in 2 to 3 years.

新聞發佈會：中大研究發現「鈉苯基丁」有潛力成為青光眼新藥

010年8月17日，本系舉行新聞發佈會，公佈科研突破，吸引眾多傳媒出席。三位教授兼研究員在記者會上詳細解釋「鈉苯基丁」新用法的研究過程及藥理，預計臨床試驗將於2至3年內開展，造福青光眼病人。

Press Conference: CUHK & Shantou University Jointly Prove Acupuncture Improves Visual Outcomes in Treating Children's Lazy Eye

The press conference, which held on June 14, 2010, was well received by more than 30 reporters from both the local and international media institution. In the conference, the speakers illustrated children's lazy eye and how our study proves acupuncture improves visual outcomes. After the Q&A sessions, the Chief Acupuncturist of the study performed the treatment with several patients from the study group.

新聞發佈會於2010年6月14日舉行，吸引逾30名中外記者出席。記者會上，各講者詳細闡述兒童弱視以及針灸治療研究的療效。問答環節過後，主針灸師即席示範針灸，接受針灸的病人均來自是項研究。

SFDA Clinical Trials Partnership Visit to Clinical Drug Trial Centers of Hong Kong Eye Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital

The China State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) visited Hong Kong Eye Hospital and Princes of Wales Hospital on March 27 2009 to review the clinical trials infrastructure development in the past 3 years since the clinical trial sites accreditation was obtained in 2006.

Following the morning visit to Princes of Wales Hospital, SFDA officials spent the afternoon at Hong Kong Eye Hospital and presentations were made by representatives from the HKEH/DOVS Clinical Drug Trial Center and the KE/KC Clinical Research Ethics Committee. The SFDA officials also reviewed clinical trials documents conducted in the Hong Kong Eye Hospital, as well as visited the clinical research and in-patient facilities of Hong Kong Eye Hospital.

The visit has been very successful and the SFDA officials were impressed by the quality of the research carried out by the ophthalmology departments at Princes of Wales Hospital and Hong Kong Eye Hospital. Although the SFDA officials did not schedule a formal assessment report at the end of the session, our centers were informed by them that the accreditation as GCP centre for SFDA registration trials is sustained.
