The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences was established in 1994, as a joint venture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong. The Department is under the management of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and is responsible for organizing the teaching of ophthalmology to undergraduate medical students of both universities. It also provides postgraduate education, vocational and subspecialty training in ophthalmology in Hong Kong.

During the last five years, the development and growth of ophthalmology in Hong Kong and of the department has bounded forward in quantum leaps. We have come a long way from the time when our founding chairman, Professor Mark O.M. Tso, arrived in Hong Kong from his distinguished career in the US and began the department from a small base at the Prince of Wales Hospital.

With full dedication and all the unfailing efforts, Professor Tso has built on dreams and ideals to make the department a center of excellence. For eye care in Hong Kong, this new but upcoming modern department has brought the precious gift of sight to many of whom may otherwise have still been afflicted with eye diseases and blindness. The reputation, expertise and care of faculty members and staff have also reached worldwide and deep into the mainland, under Professor Tso's able leadership.

We have prepared the following homepage to serve as an introduction and to report to you on the growth of our Department. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Tso for all that he has done, without his vision, his dream, his leadership, this Department would not be as it is today, reputable and strong. The road ahead is still a long and winding one, but with perseverance, hard work and commitment, we will go on from strength to strength.
