Prof. Calvin CP PANG

Recipient of the EP Abraham Research Fund Scholarship for his DPhil research programme 1978-81 at the University of Oxford, Prof Pang was also awarded a Commonwealth Medical Fellowship from the Association of Commonwealth Universities UK in 1989.

Prof Pang has heavy international academic duties and has organized the scientific programmes of several international scientific conferences. He is a consultant in molecular biology techniques to the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry & Laboratory Medicine and is visiting professor of 5 universities in China.

Prof Pang is reviewer of several indexed journals including Ophthalmology and Clinical Chemistry. He has also served as guest editor of Microscopy Research Techniques. Being the director of laboratory research & postgraduate studies of DOVS, Prof Pang has been the supervisor of more than 15 postgraduate research students of CUHK, and the examiner of 16 PhD and 7 MPhil theses. He has been appointed External Examiner of PhD candidates by the University of Hong Kong, Shanghai Medical University, and the National University of Singapore.

Prof Pang utilizes a wide range of technologies in his research work: molecular biology, protein biochemistry, chromatography, mass spectrometry, and cell culture. His major ongoing research areas cover
(1) functions of the TIGR-MYOC gene in glaucoma,
(2) molecular and biochemical genetics of common eye diseases: age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, cataracts, and primary open angle glaucoma,
(3) mapping for chromosomal loci of myopia and glaucoma,
(4) DNA repair functions of the Rb gene,
(5) novel treatment modalities: gene therapy for retinitis pigmentosa and artificial tissue for corneal injuries,
(6) biology of limbal stem cells and retinal pigment cells,
(7) biochemistry of anti-oxidants in ocular and obstetric, and neonatal complications.
Prof Pang has received more than HK$8million in research grants either as principal investigator or as co-investigator. He has contributed more than 90 publications to peer reviewed journals and edited a book.
