Prof. Roger W. BEUERMAN

Roger W. Beuerman, PhD. is currently Scientific Director of the Singapore Eye Research Institute and a Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore, in addition he is Professor of Ophthalmology, Neuroscience, Cell Biology and Anatomy at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Dr. Beuerman has a number of other academic appointments at other institutions including Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University. His academic service extends to serving on many review committees at the National Institutes of Health and is currently a permanent member of the study section for cornea and anterior segment at the National Eye Institute. His work on corneal wound healing, innervation and dry eye has been funded by the NEI by the NEI for more than 20 years. He has been a leader in the development of white light confocal microscopy for the ophthalmology clinic, and was awarded the Everett Kinsey Lecturer by the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists and the Alcon Research Institute Award, and the Kyoto Cornea Club. Real-time confocal microscopy provides an important new diagnostic tool for many infections of the cornea and for understanding the corneal changes after refractive surgery. He also has a program on peripheral nerve repair focusing on neuromas. He has worked extensively in neuroscience education and has headed a successful program in this area for the past eight years. He has published more than 150 papers and chapters, a book on corneal wound healing with a book about confocal microscopy in progress.
