About the Music Department

The Department of Music, founded in 1965 by Chung Chi College within the Faculty of Arts, was the first degree-granting music institution in Hong Kong. The Department believes that the best undergraduate music education consists of a well-chosen balance between a performing-oriented approach and a traditional academic and scholarly study of music. Music students may elect to study the following areas in more depth during their years at the Chinese University: Performance (Western, non-Western or Early Music Instruments), Theory, Composition, Music History or Chinese Music. At the graduate level, we offer studies in Ethnomusicology (Chinese Music and other traditions), Music Theory, Historical Musicology (Western Music) and Composition.

Enrolment

There are about 160 undergraduate students enrolled in programmes leading to a B.A. in Music, and more than 100 in the Postgraduate programmes (M.A., MPhil, MMus, PhD, and DMus).

Teaching Staff

All full-time faculty members of the Music Department hold doctoral degrees from well-respected universities. Most of the part-time instructors, who are largely responsible for instrumental lessons, hold either Master's or Doctoral degrees. Many of these musicians perform professionally in Hong Kong, and a number are members of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

Eve of PH: 9:00 am - 5:30 pm (staff will stay until 5:45 pm if this falls on Friday)
