Associate Professor and Chair, Musicology and Ethnomusicology Division, University of Maryland, College Park

J. Lawrence (Larry) Witzleben did his undergraduate studies in literature and in music theory and history at the University of California (Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara) and his graduate work in ethnomusicology at the Universities of Hawaii and Pittsburgh. He has also been a research student in Chinese music theory and performance at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan Center for Chinese Studies. His primary research area has been Chinese instrumental music, and he is the author of Silk and Bamboo Music in Shanghai: The Jiangnan Sizhu Instrumental Ensemble Tradition (Kent State University Press, 1995), winner of the Society for Ethnomusicology's 1996 Alan Merriam Prize for the year's best book in the field of ethnomusicology.
