Yu Siu Wah

After completing a B.A. in Music (CUHK, 1978), Yu worked for the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Radio Television Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He then began graduate studies, earning an M.A. in ethnomusicology from the Queen's University at Belfast and a Ph.D. in musicology from Harvard. His research interests include traditional Chinese instrumental music, musical instruments, Chinese music history, and the movie music of Hong Kong. He teaches Chinese music history and ethnomusicology at CUHK. His book, Out of Chaos and Coincidence: Hong Kong Music Culture, is published by the Hong Kong Oxford University Press (2001).

Research Interests

Chinese music history, Qing music history, compositional techniques used in Cantonese opera, music of Hong Kong, Chinese traditional instrumental music, organology.
