Brian Thompson

Brian Thompson completed a B.F.A. in theory and composition at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He then attended the University of Victoria, where he studied historical musicology and wrote a thesis on John Adams's opera Nixon in China. After completing a Master of Library and Information Studies degree at McGill University, he held positions as a music librarian at McGill, at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and at the University of Hong Kong, where he completed his Ph.D in historical musicology in 2000. After two years as editor website Naxos.com he joined the staff of the CUHK Music Department, teaching Western music history courses. His research has focused on the musical life of North America, and his interests include nationalism in music, film music and sound recordings.

Research Interests

North American music since the mid 19th century, nationalism in music, history of recorded sound.
