Chan Wai-kwong Victor

Victor Chan received his PhD degree from the University of York in UK. Over the years, Chan is celebrated as an active composer, conductor and contemporary music promoter. His works have been widely performed in many parts of the world and have officially represented Hong Kong on numerous international occasions, including the Asian Composers' League Festivals, the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers Conference, and the Tanglewood Music Festival, etc.

Chan is a prolific composer and has produced over 100 works to date. His musical composition ranges from opera, orchestral works, to numerous chamber works, choral pieces and songs, many of which are published and released on CD. More recently he concentrated himself in writing orchestral music and conducting their performances. In the past five years alone, he produced more than ten extended orchestral works. His latest works include "Hui" (Symphonic Fantasia) (in celebration of the 1997 reunification of Hong Kong and China), 'Fanfare for Orchestra' (commissioned for the opening of the 1997 WBG/IMF Annual Meetings', 'From Within' (released in 1999 by Global Music Network, UK), 'Dreams Afar' (commissioned for the Philharmonic Orchestra of Radio France), and 'Cherished Moments' (commissioned for celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the PRC), all receiving critical acclaim.

Dr. Chan frequently appears as conductor in various concerts and has directed the premieres of many contemporary works. Since 1993, he has been serving as vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild. He was also appointed Composer-in-Residence at the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra from 1997 to 2000. In the year 1998, he was granted the Outstanding Young Persons Award. He was further presented the Raymond Weil (Geneve) Outstanding Musical Achievement Award in 1999. Dr. Chan has been teaching at the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 1989, currently serving as Professor at the Music Department.
