COMPETITION: 2nd YOUTH INNOVATION COMPETITION ON GLOBAL GOVERNANCE (YICGG)

Deadline: May 31, 2008 (Tuesday)

CUHK faculty and postgraduate students are invited to participate in the 2nd YOUTH INNOVATION COMPETITION ON GLOBAL GOVERNANCE (YICGG) co-initiated by United Nations Development Program and Fudan University (website: www.cgg.fudan.edu.cn). In 2008, the programme will be partnered with two Italian higher education institutions of international relevance: Rome Tor Vergata Universityˇ¦s Faculty of Economics and CEIS - Centre Economic and International Studies, and the Politecnico of Turin.

The official theme of YICGG this year is: Global Governance: Growth and Innovation 2020. The Competition expects to bring some 100 students from more than 30 countries to share their innovative ideas on global governance. It offers an excellent opportunity for postgraduate and doctoral students to speak out their new ideas, receive face-to face guidance from world renowned scholars in global governance field, meet youth elites worldwide and build their social network. Moreover, finalists invited to the trip to Italy may also gain an opportunity to experience the dynamic, integrated and open European common space and its strong ties and partnership with Asia.

 
     
 

ELIGIBLE PARTICIPANTS

You may apply for the YICGG 2008 if you are currently enrolled as a Masterˇ¦s student or have started your PhD studies.

Faculty members may also participate as a supervisor and reviewer of the student research projects.


COMPETETION CALENDAR

April 22 - May 15, 2008
You may choose a specific issue that you are interested in under the theme of ˇ§Global Governanceˇ¨, then work out a project and give an innovative solution by forming a Research Team or on your own. The committee suggests, but not limited to, the following fields:
1) United Nations: the International Governance Looking for a New ˇ§Glass Palaceˇ¨
2) Next Generation 2020
3) Growth and Global Governance: New Theories, Applied Models and Policies
4) Alternative Energies: Countdown Beyond Oil
5) Climate Warming, Environment Priorities, Water Management and International Choices
6) Innovation and New Technologies: the Crucial Contribution from Aerospace and Car Manufacturing
7) ICT and Nanotechnologies Further Revolution
8) Regional Approach and International Relations: does it matter
9) Transition, a process far from ending
10) Higher Education, Human Capital and Lifelong Learning: Europe, Asia and America challenge
11) Cultural Heritage and Development
12) Wide Europe and Asia as Major Players in the Future Global Growth

May 31 - July 31, 2008

  • By May 31, selected participants or Research Teams will be invited formally by the hosting university to participate in the second and third phases of the Competition in Italy
  • By the end of June 2008 the first draft must be sent by the participants and Research Teams to the supervising Faculty and Experts upon further advice of the organizers
  • By the end of July 2008 a second draft must be sent by the participants and Research Teams to the supervising Faculty and Experts.

August 17 - August 23, 2008
Selected participants and Research Teams will be invited to participate in a workshop offered by Rome Tor Vergata University. It will be hosted in cooperation with the Italian Air Force at the residential facilities of Casa dellˇ¦Aviatore in downtown Rome. The workshop will be on the same issues and themes of the shortlisted research projects. This will be an opportunity to further review and update the final drafts of the research projects to be presented the week later at Politecnico of Turin.

August 24 - August 28, 2008

  • Presentation of the 8-10 research projects by selected Research Teams, following the rules on YICGG 2008 to be announced by end of May
  • Evaluate and award the ˇ§The Most Innovative Teamˇ¨ (MIT)
  • Form a ˇ§World Teamˇ¨ and develop solutions to a hot issue on global governance in the year of 2008
  • Evaluate and award ˇ§The Most Valuable Project on Global Governanceˇ¨ (MVP)
  • Prize presentation to the best research projects presented
  • Issuance of Attendance Certificates to all the participants


TERMS OF AWARD

Students selected for the final competition will be granted free accommodation in Rome and Turin in Italy and a certificate of attendance. The Italian Universities will also cover costs of breakfast, lunch and some free cultural programmes. Airfare will be the responsibility of the students.

Selected faculty members who volunteered as supervisors and reviewers of the student research projects will also be hosted by the Italian Universities with special accommodation during the two weeks of final competition. Airfare will be the responsibility of the faculty members.
