The Global Scholarship Programme for Research Excellence-CNOOC Grants is designed to enhance research excellence at CUHK through building and consolidating the Universityˇ¦s ties with leading research universities/institutes around the world and to increase the visibility of CUHK as a world-class research university through student and staff mobility.
ELIGIBILITY AND TERMS
The Programme supports PhD students and junior faculty staff of CUHK to undertake short-term research visits in a selected group of 23 leading universities/institutes listed in the Guidelines for Applicants. In addition, it supports PhD students from those leading universities/institutes to undertake a short-term research attachment in CUHK. The Programme details of each category are summarized as follows:
CUHK Junior Faculty
- Applicant must hold a full-time appointment at CUHK and should normally be at Assistant or Associate Professor rank substantiated within the last 3 years or on a type of contract [Type K1 (SX)] that may lead to substantive appointment in the course of employment at CUHK.
- The research visit shall last for a minimum of 4 weeks. It shall be carried out and completed before 31 December 2010.
- Up to 6 awards will be given out each year and each award is valued up to HK$20,000 for a 4-week activity or HK$30,000 for a 6-week (or longer) activity.
CUHK PhD Student
- Applicant must be a registered full-time PhD student of CUHK.
- The research visit shall last for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months. It shall be carried out and completed before 31 December 2010.
- Up to 13 awards will be given out each year and each award is valued up to HK$50,000. The value of the award will vary based on the duration of visit and costs at the host institution.
Visiting PhD Student
- Applicant must be a registered full-time PhD student from one of the 23 selected leading universities/institutes listed in Appendix 1.
- The research visit shall last for at least 1 month. It shall be carried out and completed before 31 December 2010.
- Up to 13 awards will be given out each year and each award is valued at HK$15,000 regardless of the length of visit.
Applicants must present a clear proposal for high impact research under the supervision of a host supervisor and must demonstrate how sustainable cooperation and links between the home and host institution will result from the visit. Priority will normally be given to research that is within the Five Areas of Excellence for strategic research investment at CUHKˇXBiomedical Sciences, Chinese Studies, Economics and Finance, Geoinformation and Earth Sciences, and Information Sciences.
Previous Global Scholarship Programme award holders may apply but priority will be given to first time applicants. Those who had been awarded twice before are not eligible to apply.

Completed applications should be submitted to the Office of Academic Links (OAL), Secretariat of the Steering Committee of the Global Scholarship Programme, by the closing date 16 OCTOBER 2009 via the following channels:
- Applications of CUHK Faculty Staff should be submitted directly to OAL.
- Applications of CUHK PhD Students should be submitted via the Graduate School Office.
- Applications of Visiting PhD Students should be submitted via the CUHK Host Department.
