Cantonese is the most widely spoken dialect in Hong Kong, but Putonghua (Mandarin) is increasingly popular. The traditional Chinese characters are commonly used in writing in Hong Kong, while simplified Chinese characters are used in Mainland China. English is the language of business and service industries and most shops and service personnel speak it to some degree.
