At CUHK, one unit (credit) is roughly equivalent to one hour of instruction per week. Most 3-unit courses are composed of 3 hours of lecture or 2 hours of lecture and 1 hour of tutorial per week. Academic departments will evaluate your performance according to their own standards. You will receive credits for all successfully completed courses.

  Undergraduate Students
All undergraduate students (exchange and study abroad students) must take a full load of courses i.e. minimum of 12 units and maximum of 18 units per semester.
Those who want to learn Chinese can take Chinese language courses in the IAS Programme (up to 6 units) offered through the New Asia—Yale-in-China Chinese Language Center. Arrangements have been made for exchange students from certain institutions to take more than 6 units of Chinese language courses. Please refer to the list here for the entitled number of Chinese language course unites for students in different exchange/study abroad programmes.

  Postgraduate Students
Postgraduate exchange students (except those from programmes with a specific course load requirement) and study abroad students have the option of taking a full load (12 - 18 units), or of conducting research by taking a minimum of 3 units per semester.
Study abroad (fee-paying) students can take up to 12 units of Chinese language courses in the IAS Programme offered through the New Asia—Yale-in-China Chinese Language Center.
