Q: The course I want to take is taught in both Cantonese/Putonghua and English. I am fluent in Cantonese/Putonghua. Should/could I take the course? How can I do the course registration?
A: The course teacher might use reference materials or specific terms in Chinese. These materials and terms may be difficult for you to understand even though you speak and understand Cantonese/Putonghua well. Therefore, you are advised to contact the teacher and ask him/her whether spoken fluency is sufficient to take the course at the beginning of the semester. You should approach the respective academic department/teacher for the course registration in the add/drop period.

Q: How can I determine if a course is in the lower or upper division?
A: At CUHK, undergraduate courses are coded 1 - 4 while postgraduate courses are coded 5 – 9. The first numeral in the course code of undergraduate courses stands for the level of study. Normally, courses in the 1000 level are lower division courses while courses in the 3000 & 4000 levels are upper division courses. For courses in the 2000 level, the classification of division varies according to policies of individual department. Students are advised to check with respective academic departments directly.

Q: I found a course that sounds interesting but I am not sure if I really want to take it. What should I do?
A: You may register for it first and see if you want to keep it later as there are 3 rounds of add/drop for you to change your course register.
