IBM-CUHK Research Fellowship Programme
Background
IBM China/Hong Kong Limited provides a scholarship namely IBM-CUHK Research
Fellowship to enable CUHK and mainland young
academics and research students to conduct
research internship in CUHK and mainland
institutions.
Objectives
-
To forge academic exchanges between CUHK, IBM
and mainland institutions;
-
To enable IBM to fulfill its meaningful vision
of nurturing future science leaders in China;
-
To provide opportunities to CUHK academics to
conduct academic exchange programmes with
renowned mainland universities.
Funding Approach
1.
IBM to set the research theme(s) for
the
IBM-CUHK Research Fellowship
for each year.
2.
Application:
Based on the research theme(s) identified by
IBM, CUHK’s Office of Academic Links (China) (OALC)
will call for proposal from CUHK faculty members
to apply for the
IBM-CUHK Research Fellowship
for funding either incoming or outgoing
internship for a period of 3 months, extendable
to 6 months.
Required content of the proposal:

Name of department/laboratory;
·
Name of project owner (i.e. faculty member);
·
Research project title;
·
Brief details of research project;
·
Requirement on the candidate for the
IBM-CUHK Research Fellowship.
Criteria for the Fellowship:
·
The research project should match the research
theme(s) as identified by IBM in the respective
year;
·
Candidates for Fellowship can either be young
academics or research students from mainland
universities or research institutions.
Funding level for each Fellowship:
Funding support to each incoming
IBM-CUHK Research Fellowship:
A monthly sponsorship of HK$11,000, for 3 months
extendable to 6 months.
Funding support to each outgoing
IBM-CUHK Research Fellowship:
A monthly sponsorship of HK$6,000, for 3 months
extendable to 6 months.
Number of Fellowships for each year: Max. 4
Fellowships and the combination of incoming and
outgoing fellowships can be flexible.
3.
OALC to submit the proposals
collectively to IBM.
4.
IBM to screen and select the successful
proposals and to inform OALC which will then
convey the selection result to the relevant
faculty members.
5.
IBM will open applications to top
mainland universities to submit applications for
research attachment in relation to the selected
project at CUHK as visiting scholars. Upon
receiving applications, IBM and the successful
project owner will jointly select the final
candidate.
**Successful CUHK project owner can also invite
applications from his or her mainland partners
for applying incoming/outgoing
IBM-CUHK Research Fellowship.
6. Funding disposal:
Upon fellowship recipient is identified, OALC
shall transfer the funding to the successful
project owner in due course.
7. Reporting:
Within one month upon the completion of the
research internship, fellowship recipients are
expected to submit a brief written report to the
CUHK project mentor and IBM. Related
publications derived from this programme must
acknowledge this IBM-CUHK Research Fellowship
donated by IBM.
8. The programme can be carried on until the
funding is depleted.
Eligibility/Application
Academic staff members whose
research areas match with the research theme(s) as identified by IBM can apply for the funding by filling in the
"Proposal for Incoming Research Fellowship" or
"Proposal for Outgoing Research Fellowship".
