Purpose: As part of the efforts to provide students with the opportunity to use language in real life for real communication purposes,
the CUHK Chinese Language Centre (CLC) has been working with educational institutions in China
on a language immersion programme that allows students to practice what they have learned in class through a variety of activities in the target culture, an approach that has been recognized by professionals and highly recommended as a most effective means of cultivating pragmatic competence
in language learners.
Format: The daily format includes three parts, (1)
lessons and pre-trip activities with CLC teachers at the host school, (2)
theme-based trip (visit or sight-seeing) in small groups led by assistant
teachers (ATs), and (3) post-trip tasks with teachers and ATs at the
host school (Q&A, discussion, presentation, etc).
Dates and Time:
19 – 26 August 2009
Lessons and pre-trip activities start at 9:30 a.m. everyday and post-trip activities normally end at about 6:00p.m.
Themes:
Culture and the Arts, history and traditions, contemporary local and
folk customs etc, to be determined and adjusted based on the actual
situation, weather and availability.
Instructors and learning activities:
- Experienced teacher(s) from CLC as the head teacher(s).
- Assistant teachers from the host school with native fluency in the dialects taught as group leaders.
- The student to teaching staff ratio will be 3 to 5:1; activities focusing on oral proficiency are carried out in groups.
Note:
Students are advised to bring their own MP3 or i-Pod for listening
exercise. Teachers will give them the MP3 files for evening
self-practice while they are in Hong Kong.
