Asian Business and Management
Faculty
Prof. Mike W. Peng
Course Description
Asia’s vast markets
suggest great promise for doing business in the region. In fact, the
business
environments in Asia are more dynamic and versatile than ever before. The
emergence of Asian
economic miracle, the outbreak of Asian financial crisis, and the
repositioning of
post-crisis Asia have all occurred during the past few decades. They did not
only change Asia itself,
but also the global business. This is a General Education course specially
designed for
non-business students to acquire a basic understanding of the business
environments and management
practices in Asia. It is divided into three parts. The first part is to give
students a broad
overview of the historical, socio-cultural, political, and economic aspects
in Asian
countries/regions. The second part introduces Asian management styles and
their origins, including
Confucianism, Yijing, and Sun Tzu’s Art of War. The third part discusses the
dark sides of
business in Asia and the impacts of Asia that are reshaping the world.
(CUHK Business
Administration Faculty Majors and students who have taken MGT4540 cannot
take this course to fulfil General Education requirements.)
