A native of Hong Kong, Cheung begins his study of philosophy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. After graduated in 1998, he was enrolled into the postgraduate program in the same university and began the research on phenomenology. In April 2000, he was awarded the Japanese Government Scholarship and began his research on Japanese philosophy and phenomenology. The title of his doctoral dissertation is Experience, Other, Body and Life – On Nishida Kitaro's Phenomenological Philosophy.
