Prof. Wong, Po Choi is a Professor in the
Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of
Hong Kong. He is a renowned leader in the use of IT in education
and was awarded the Medal of Honor by the Hong Kong SAR for his
contributions to education in 2001. In 1998, he led a joint
university effort to develop the Hong Kong Cyber Campus (http://www.hkcampus.net),
linking over 900 schools to the Internet. In 2000, he helped the
Education Department to build the Hong Kong Education City (
http://www.hkedcity.net).
It became the flagship education portal in Hong Kong with millions
of page views a day. He led several award-winning projects
including: VIOLA, a video-on-demand system on local area networks,
Hong Kong School Net, an Internet for schools, students, and
teachers, NetPlan (
http://netplan.school.net.hk)
- school network security support. School Net won the IT
Application Award in Education in 1998. VIOLA won two US patents
and the IT Excellence Award in 1999. NetPlan won two Grand Linux
Adoption Awards (SME and Education categories) organized by HKPC in
2003. In 2004, Prof. Wong started another large scale project –
VChina, a video conferencing network linking hundreds of schools in
HK and China: Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Ningbo, Hangzhou, Nanhai,
Yunnan, Lazar of Tibet, Singapore, Sabah of Malaysia, New Zealand,
etc. VChina won the QEF Outstanding Project Award in April 2008
among thousands of projects.
Prof. Wong is now the Chairman of the Committee on
Home-School Cooperation, leading 18 districts of parent-teacher
associations to promote home-school cooperation and family education
in Hong Kong. He also serves in a number of top government
committees, including Education Commission, Family Council, and IT
in Education Steering Committee.
