There is a choice of four levels of courses, with each level consisting of two courses and carrying 6 credits.

Notes: 1. These Putonghua courses are for students without knowledge of Chinese characters or who can identify less than 3,000 Chinese characters.  Also, their ability to speak Putonghua must NOT be close to native level.
  2. Students are required to upload a Language Background form when they submit an online application. Those who are not absolute beginners will be invited for a written and/or spoken placement test. According to their placement result, students will be placed tentatively in a class suitable for them. Their level will be finalized by a face-to-face placement test by the language teacher(s) at the beginning of the programme. If students encounter learning difficulties at the assigned level, they may switch to another class during the Add/Drop period, subject to the Chinese Language Centre¡¦s approval.
  3. Guidelines: Putonghua (Standard Chinese) Level 1 for total beginners, Putonghua (Standard Chinese) Level 2 for learners with less than 500 hours of study and Putonghua (Standard Chinese) Level 3 for learners with less than 1,000 hours of study.
  4. Students are advised to bring their own MP3 or i-Pod for listening exercises.  Teachers will give them MP3 files for evening self-practice.

Simplified Chinese will be used in lessons.  Both simplified and traditional Chinese textbooks are available.
