新任逸夫書院院長
New Head of Shaw College

大學校董會依據大學規程9第1段及第3段規定，並經根據大學規程9第1段及規程16第6（b）段所組成的委員會推薦，委任電子工程學講座教授程伯中教授繼楊汝萬教授出任逸夫書院院長，任期四年，由二零零四年二月十一日起生效。

In accordance with Statute 9.1 and 9.3 of the University Ordinance, Prof. P.C. Ching, professor of electronic engineering, has been appointed by the University Council as Head of Shaw College for a period of four years from 11th February 2004, succeeding Prof. Yeung Yue-man.

新任講座教授
Professorial Appointment

大學委任顏慶義教授為電子工程學講座教授，任期由二零零三年十二月十五日起生效。

顏教授先後於一九七八及八二年取得英國拉夫伯勒科技大學理學士及哲學博士學位，其後任教於新加坡國立大學、澳洲蒙納殊大學和西澳洲大學，加入中大服務前，為新加坡南洋科技大學電腦工程學院講座教授。

顏教授是多個專業學院的院士，十多種學術期刊的編委或審稿員。他的研究興趣包括錄像編碼及通訊、數碼影像處理、數碼訊號處理、電腦通訊和電訊網絡，與合作夥伴共同持有四項專利權。

Prof. King N. Ngan was appointed professor of electronic engineering on 15th December 2003.

Prof. Ngan obtained his B.Sc. and his Ph.D. from Loughborough University of Technology in the UK. He has taught at National University of Singapore, Monash University in Australia, the University of Western Australia, and most recently, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore where he was chair professor of the School of Computer Engineering and assistant director of research. He was visiting professor to The Chinese University in 1998.

Prof. Ngan's research interests include video coding and communications, digital image processing, digital signal processing, computer communications, and telecommunication networks.

He is a fellow of IEEE in the US, IEE in the UK, and the Institution of Engineers in Australia.

研究院接受入學申請

研究院現接受二零零四至二零零五年度的入學申請，截止日期為二零零四年二月二十九日。

研究院下年度將提供二百一十五項課程，包括一百一十七項研究式課程（博士課程五十一項、哲學碩士博士銜接課程十項、碩士課程五十六項）及九十八項修課式課程（博士課程一項、碩士課程七十八項、學士後文憑課程十九項）。課程分全日制及兼讀制，研究式課程的全日制學生可獲研究生助學金。
索取或查閱有關資料的方法如下：

（一）	研究院網頁（http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/gss/）提供詳盡資料和網上入學申請。
（二）	於辦公時間內前往研究院索取，地址為教研樓一座四樓（何善衡工程學大樓側）。
（三）	致函沙田香港中文大學研究院，列明申請的學科，並附回郵信封，信封須貼上足夠郵資*且不小於32cm x 24cm。

員工優異服務獎接受提名
The Exemplary Service Award 2003-4 Invites Nominations

由員工培訓及發展委員會舉辦的二零零三至二零零四年度員工優異服務獎已開始接受提名，所有按乙類或丙類服務條例或相類條件聘用的中大全職非教學僱員，皆可接受提名。此獎項旨在嘉許於顧客服務中有出色表現的非教學人員，名額五至十個，得獎者可各獲獎牌一面及現金禮券。

大學學生及教職員建議提名的截止日期為二月十八日，系主任或部門主管最終提名的截止日期則為三月十三日。委員會已於日前致函各部門主管，籲請大學同人踴躍支持選舉，嘉獎提供優異服務的員工。

The Exemplary Service Award 2003-4 is now open for nomination. The award, organized by the Staff Training and Development Committee, aims at recognizing non-teaching staff who provide outstanding service to their clients. Five to 10 awards will be made. A trophy and a gift coupon will be presented to each awardee. All full-time Terms of Service (B)/(C) and equivalent non-teaching staff are eligible for nomination.

The deadline for recommendation for nomination by University students and staff is 18th February while the deadline for nomination by department chairmen/unit heads is 13th March. Invitations for nomination have been sent by the committee to the department chairmen and unit heads.

鍾南山教授出任逸夫書院邵逸夫爵士傑出訪問學人
Shaw College 2003-4 Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar

著名呼吸內科專家、廣州醫學院院長及廣州疾病研究所所長鍾南山教授，本月出任逸夫書院二零零三至二零零四年度邵逸夫爵士傑出訪問學人，與書院學生交流及主持公開講座。

鍾教授將於一月十九日晚上與逸夫同學悠然夜話，分享其學術研究心得及暢談對抗非典型肺炎的經歷，一月二十日下午五時則在逸夫書院大講堂主持「非典的啟示」公開講座，歡迎出席。查詢請電二六零九七三六零或電郵 christy-chan@cuhk.edu.hk。

2003-4 Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar, Prof. Zhong Nan Shan, president of Guangzhou Medical College and head of the Institute of Respiratory Disease in Guangzhou, is visiting Shaw College.

Prof. Zhong will meet Shaw students over dinner on 19th January to share his experiences in the medical field and will deliver a public lecture entitled 'What We Have Learnt from SARS' in the Shaw College Lecture Theatre on 20th January at 5.00 p.m. All are welcome.

訃告
Obituary

前任理學院院長及化學系教授柳愛華教授於二零零四年一月十五日辭世，大學同人深表哀悼。

柳教授一九六八年加入崇基學院化學系任教，二零零三年八月一日榮休。她於一九九四至二零零三年出任理學院院長，並以該身份出任大學校董，一九八零至二零零三年擔任崇基學院院務委員，一九八六至九五年出任崇基校董。

柳教授榮休後，仍出任化學系和中醫學院的兼任教授，以及崇基學院資深導師，繼續支持大學的發展。大學師生深切懷念柳教授對高等教育的熱忱和對中大的長期貢獻。

The University records with deep sadness the passing away of Prof. Lau Oi Wah, former professor in the Department of Chemistry and former dean of the Faculty of Science, on 15th January 2004. She was 63.

Prof. Lau joined the Department of Chemistry of Chung Chi College in 1968 and retired from University service on 1st August 2003. During the period, she had served as dean of the Faculty of Science for three terms from 1994 to 2003 (and in that capacity, also as member of the University Council), member of the Chung Chi College Assembly of Fellows from 1980 to 2003, and member of the Chung Chi College Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1995.

After her retirement, Prof. Lau continued to render her service to the University as adjunct professor in the Department of Chemistry and the School of Chinese Medicine, and senior college tutor of Chung Chi College.

Prof. Lau's dedication to higher education and loyal service to the University will be long remembered by her students and colleagues.
