3. The Octopus Card

Most public transport requires exact fare in Hong Kong. To make travelling easy, we recommend using an Octopus Card.

Octopus is an electronic ticketing system. The Octopus Card can be used virtually on all public transportations in Hong Kong, including the MTR system, almost all buses (including all airport buses), and the ferries. You simply swipe your Octopus Card over the fare deducting processor when passing through the ticket gates or boarding the buses. Most chain shops such as convenience stores, supermarkets, fast food restaurants and some campus canteens accept payments by Octopus Cards.

Octopus Card can be purchased at the customer services centre of any MTR stations. When you purchase an Octopus Card, a refundable deposit of HK$50 is included. You can reload your card with cash at customer services centre or add value machine at any MTR stations or any convenience stores. The stored value for each card can be reloaded to a maximum of HK$1,000.

The remaining value (if no more than HK$500) and the deposit can be refunded on-the-spot at customer services centre of any MTR stations. However, a fee of HK$9 will be charged.
