Short Description
The third five-day Summer School of the Useyour project will take place 22-26 July 2013. As before, it is for native Anglophones from anywhere in the world. From 2013 we offer an expanded choice of classes which can be taken singly or combined in a choice of two: translation into English from Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish or Swedish, and Editing from non-Anglophone texts, which is now available as a full course as well as an additional element for all students. All these courses are taught by professionals in the field – their details can be found on this website. All classes consist of a two-hour morning and a two-hour afternoon session.

Another innovation in 2013 is the expansion of the French and German workshops into two groups covering different kinds of texts: one will focus on literary translation and the other on academic translation; if you are a single-French or single-German student, you may opt to take one of these as your ‘Language 1’ and the other as your ‘Language 2’. As last year, there will also be guest lectures, competitions, bursaries (closing date 26 April), social and networking events and the option of student-hall accommodation.

The Summer School will be held in Birkbeck's main building in Torrington Square.

7th EST Congress: Translation Studies: Centres and Peripheries
Organisation European Society for Translation Studies
日期 Date 29–31 August 2013
地點 Venue Germersheim
Website http://www.fb06.uni-mainz.de/est/index.php
Contact est2013@uni-mainz.de
Short Description
As Holmes states in his seminal paper “The Name and Nature of Translation Studies”, our discipline establishes institutions and discourses around which groups of researchers gather, exchange ideas and develop new theories and models. The growing number of training and research institutions for translation studies and of journals and book series focusing on translation research, the expanding territory of expert forums and blogs on the worldwide web as well as the numerous conference announcements from all over the world are clear indications of an ever increasing interest in the discipline. Whereas initially research, teaching and theory were mainly based in European contexts, promoted under European influence and shaped according to European theoretical perspectives and translation politics, nowadays approaches to translation from different geographies all over the world have been gaining more and more ground. Besides its own ‘internal’ impetus, translation studies has also been receiving growing attention from scholars in other disciplines. The Germersheim EST conference is designedto provide a framework for discussing centre-periphery relations within the discipline from a multifaceted angle: centre-periphery relations concerning the objects of research, the discourses of Translation Studies, and the links between Translation Studies and other disciplines.

Translation and Modernization in East Asia in the 19th and Early 20th Century Conference
Organisation Research Centre for Translation (RCT), The Chinese University of Hong Kong

地點 Venue The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Website http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/rct/ts/modern
Contact Ms. Olivia LUI, translationhistory@cuhk.edu.hk
Short Description
This conference plans to study the role played by translation in the modernization of East Asian countries in the 19th and early 20th century, a project at the Research Centre for Translation (RCT), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, supported by the University's Focused Investment Scheme and the RCT Research Programme Fund.

In the 19th and early 20th century, East Asia underwent a process of modernization to cope with the serious challenges brought by the Western powers. While different countries and places might have taken different courses, the process of modernization was characterized by elements ranging from military, political, economic, technological and medical reforms to changes in the legal, administrative, diplomatic as well as education, literary and media systems. There was a long-term socio-political and cultural impact that shaped the “modern” East Asia of the 20th–21st century.

While modernization was in no way simply equivalent to westernization, many in the 19th and early 20th century did see the West as the model for modernization. Modernization in East Asia was thus more often than not taken as a process of learning from or even imitating the West. In this process, translation played a crucial role, when efforts were made to import Western ideas, knowledge, concepts and practices. Although numerous studies have been made of the modernization of East Asia, the lack of study of the role of translation in this process has been a major weakness in our understanding of the topic.
