Jin Yong [pen name of Louis Cha ¬d¨}ó`] 1924-

Cha is a household name in the contemporary Chinese-speaking world. Native of Haining, Zhejiang, and a descendant of an eminent literary family, Cha is arguably the most influential and successful modern Chinese novelist of the martial arts genre. He has under his name fifteen novels and novellas, all written between 1955 and 1972, while revised versions of his works were issued later in 1980 and 1999. Cha's works have been widely translated into various languages and adapted into different media forms. Cha was also a dedicated littérateur, commentator and the co-founder of Ming Pao ©ú³ø, a major Chinese newspaper in Hong Kong. English translations of his works include Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain (tr. Olivia Mok, 1993), The Deer and the Cauldron (tr. John Minford, 1997¡V2002) and The Book and the Sword (tr. Graham Earnshaw, 2004).
