Mu Dan (Mu Tan) [real name Zha Liangzheng] 1918-1977

A poet and translator born in Tianjin to a family originally from Zhejiang. He graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of National Southwest Associated University in 1940. From 1948 to 1951 he was at the University of Chicago, where he gained his MA, returning to China in 1952 to teach at Nankai University. Here he also published numerous translations of western literature. His poems were published in three collections in the 1940s, and he wrote no more poetry until 1976.
He was labelled a counter-revolutionary and demoted to clerical work in the library in 1958, but was rehabilitated posthumously in 1979.
