Mu Shiying (Mu Shih-ying) 穆時英 1912-1940

Mu was a renowned fiction writer of the ‘New Sensationist School’ 新感覺派. He published his first pieces of fiction at the age of eighteen and quickly established himself as a major modernist writer in the 1930s. His fictional work features an urban aesthetic and detailed depictions of the lifestyles of modern city-dwellers. Many of his works, including ‘Shanghai de hubuwu’ 上海的狐步舞 [The Shanghai foxtrot] (1932) and ‘Pierrot’ (1934), were published in the Shanghai-based journal Les Contemporains 現代 edited by Shi Zhecun 施蟄存.
