Sha Yexin 1939-

Contemporary playwright. A member of the Hui nationality, Sha was born in Nanjing. While still at high-school he published his first short-story. After graduating from the Chinese Department of East China Normal University, he undertook research in the field of drama and published his first one-act play, Yi fen qian [One cent], in 1965. After the fall of the Gang of Four in 1976, he published a whole series of successful plays, including Haohao xuexi [Diligent study], YesuĄDKongziĄDPitoushi Lienong [Jesus, Confucius and John Lennon] and Makesi mishi [Secret history of Marx]. In 1985 he became head of the Shanghai People's Art Theatre.
