Shu Wei 1765-1816

Qing-dynasty poet born in Peking. Shu spent much of his early life on the move, and, failing to obtain the jinshi degree, at one point set up a school. As a poet, Shu Wei is celebrated for the breadth of his concerns. His work is characterized by a sense of frustration in the face of reality. There is also an interest in minority nationalities expressed in his writing. He also wrote five zaju plays, of which only one survives.
