Joseph S. M. Lau 1934-

An academic, writer, literary critic and translator, Lau was born in Hong Kong. After graduation from National Taiwan University in 1960, he went on to study in the United States where he received his Ph.D. in comparative literature. He has taught at universities in Hong Kong, Singapore, Hawaii, and Madison, Wisconsin and was for many years Chair Professor of Translation and head of the Department of Chinese at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. He made his name as a creative writer with Chi malingshu de rizi 吃馬鈴薯的日子 [Potato-eating days] (1970), an account of his experience as a postgraduate student in the US.
