Tao Zongyi (T'ao Tsung-i) 1316-

Writer and scholar of the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. Tao was a native of Huangyan (modern-day Zhejiang). He repeatedly refused to accept official positions, preferring instead to devote himself to writing and research. His major works include the compilation Shuofu [The environs of fiction] and the Chuogeng lu [Records compiled after retiring from the farm], another collection with a more personal point of view. Tao also produced a history of calligraphy, completed a book of poems, and edited a collection of biographies, the Caomang sicheng [A private history of common heroes].
