Yang Jifu 1904-1962

Modern poet. Born in Wanxian in Sichuan province, Yang Jifu went to Peking in 1924 where he studied at univeristy and attended Lu Xun's lectures. In 1931, he and He Qifang edited the literary journal Hong shaqi [Red desert]. In the autumn of the same year he returned to Sichuan, and it was then he first learned he was suffering from tuberculosis. Fron 1938 onwards, he served as a teacher in Wanxian. Seven years later, he started a progressive school at Yuquan, an action which eventually led to his arrest by the Nationalist (KMT) authorities. After 1949, Yang Jifu held several posts in the PRC's provincial administration.
