Zhang Tingyu 張廷玉 1672-1755

Zhang born in Tongcheng, Anhui, was a historian and politician in the Qing dynasty. He passed the imperial examination as jinshi 進士 in 1700 and was afterward appointed as a Hanlin Academician. Zhang served under the reign of Emperors Kangxi 康熙, Yongzheng 雍正 and Qianlong 乾隆 and was favoured by all three. Apart from his achievement in government, he was also well remembered as the main editor and compiler of important works such as Mingshi 明史 [History of the Ming dynasty] and Daqing huidian 大清會典 [Collected statutes of the great Qing].
