Zhang Yanghao (Chang Yang-hao) 1270-1329

Yuan-dynasty poet born in present day Shandong province. Recommended to office, he was demoted and subsequently dismissed after angering superiors with his criticism of government policies. He was later reappointed to important posts, only to work himself to death when put in charge of relief work for the drought stricken central Yellow River basin in 1329. Zhang's prolific output of essays and sanqu show a high order of artistry and an abiding concern for the people. His works are collected in the Quan Jin Yuan ci and Jin Yuan sanqu.
