Zhou Mengdie (Chou Meng-tieh) 1920-

A legendary character in the Taiwan literary scene, moved to Taiwan with the Nationalist army in 1949, leaving behind his whole family on the mainland. For years he led a life of hardship and ran a street stall in Taipei selling books. Despite high acclaim for his two early books of poetry Gudu guo [Lonely land] (1959) and Huanhun cao [Goddess incarnate] (1965), Chou did not publish any other poetry collections until 2002, when Shisan duo bai juhua [Thirteen white chrysanthemums] and Yuehui [A date] appeared.
