History and Background

Centre for Hong Kong Cultural Studies was formerly the Programme for Hong Kong Cultural Studies, which ran from 1994 to 1998 under the Research Institute for the Humanities. Prof. Stephen Chan was the founding director of the programme during 1994-1997, the directorship was then taken up by Prof. Lawrence Wong since 1997. In 1994-1998, the Programme has:

  • secured a funding of HK$3 million from the Central Allocation Fund of the Research Grant Council to conduct research in Hong Kong cultural studies
  • secured a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation
  • published nine books in the Book Series entitled "Hong Kong Cultural Studies"
  • published five books on Hong Kong literature
  • published a bulletin which ran for nine issues
  • organized three international conferences on Hong Kong cultural studies

Projects and Publications

Seminars - In connection with the project on "Oral History: Hong Kong Culture and Literature", seminars were organised on "Oral History of Hong Kong Culture" in 2002-03 in collaboration with the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, the Department of Religion and the Department of Music. Scholars and experts in the fields of Hong Kong literature, religion and music were be invited to present at the seminars.

Publications - Book series of Hong Kong Cultural Studies(香港文化研究叢書

Research Project on Hong Kong Literature - A research project on the canonization of Hong Kong literature has been initiated.
