Summer Camp, Exhibitions and Popular Science Talks
Summer Camps http://www.chem.cuhk.edu.hk/outreach_1summer.htm
Starting from 2001, the Department of Chemistry organises the Chemistry Summer Camp during the summer vacation for Secondary 6 students. This programme aims to inspire students with the beauty of science as well as to stimulate their interest to explore the fascinating world of Chemistry. This programme includes popular science talks, interesting chemistry experiments, group discussion and presentations and a variety of social activities.
Chemistry Expo http://www.chem.cuhk.edu.hk/outreach_1summer.htm
The Chemistry Expo was organized by a group of undergraduate students and held during the summers of 2001 and 2002. It was a half-day programme including talks on modern chemistry delivered by undergraduate students, a hands-on laboratory session and a poster session.
Lecture Series on Modern Chemistry 2004 http://www.chem.cuhk.edu.hk/outreach_3lecture.htm
Our Department has organised a lecture series on modern chemistry during the period of January to April, 2004 for senior secondary (S.5 to S.7) students. The present programme consists of ten lectures given in five sessions, with a view to introducing to students selected topics in frontier chemistry as well as those related to our daily lives. More than 1,000 students and teachers from 39 secondary schools have participated in this event.
Workshop: Applications of Infrared Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry in Drug, Food and Polymer Analysis
This workshop was organized by the Department of Chemistry during the period of January to May, 2005. The theme of the workshop is about the applications of modern spectroscopic techniques in the identification of daily commodities. It aims to arouse secondary school students¡¦ interests in chemistry, and enhance their knowledge of modern chemical technology. It was a half-day programme including a short lecture and hands-on laboratory sessions on various advanced analytical instruments.
Contributions in Chemistry Education
Promoting and enhancing chemistry education among secondary school students has always been one of our departmental missions. As part of this endeavor, we have been in keen collaboration with the Curriculum Development Institute of the Education and Manpower Bureau, and the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority. We have been involved in the preparation of various resource materials to support the teaching and learning of chemistry in high school, and organized many programs and activities in recent years.
Educational Television (ETV) Programmes http://www.chem.cuhk.edu.hk/outreach_5contribution.htm
To promote the general science, in particular chemistry to Secondary 1-3 students, the Department has produced a series of six ETV programmes with the ETV Section of Curriculum Development Institute of Education and Manpower Bureau.
Inquiry-Based Experiment http://www.chem.cuhk.edu.hk/outreach_5contribution.htm
The Department co-organised with the Curriculum Development Institute, Education and Manpower Bureau a one-day workshop for about 30 teachers in January 2002 to introduce an inquiry-based approach in practical work to support the new Secondary 4-5 Chemistry Curriculum launched in 2003. An exemplary manual was prepared subsequently and distributed to secondary schools as a resource material.
Production of IT-Resource Materials http://www.chem.cuhk.edu.hk/outreach_5contribution.htm
The Department won an open bid from the Curriculum Development Institute, Education and Manpower Bureau to produce an interactive CD-ROM package entitled "Reactions of Metals" in 2003. It was a bilingual multimedia learning kit containing a collection of resource materials to enhance the learning of chemistry of various metals.
Production of the Resource Book for Sixth-form Practical Chemistry http://www.chem.cuhk.edu.hk/ssc.htm
The Department produced a bilingual (Chinese and English) resource book for sixth-form practical Chemistry. The production was in collaboration with the Curriculum Development Institute (CDI) of the Education and Manpower Bureau and the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA). It included 12 tailor-designed experiments to support the new sixth-form Chemistry curriculum to be implemented in 2005. The resource book was distributed to all secondary schools in September 2004, and is also available for download from the Department website.
Pilot Science Research Programme for Secondary School Students http://www.chem.cuhk.edu.hk/outreach_1summer.htm
The Science Faculty won an open bid from the Curriculum Development Institute of Education and Manpower Bureau to offer this programme (held during July and August 2002) with the goal of providing basic research training to gifted Secondary 6 students. Part 1 of the programme involved a series of popular science talks, while Part 2 consisted of several research projects.
Enriching Students' Learning Experience in Science http://www.chem.cuhk.edu.hk/outreach_5contribution.htm
This function was part of the collaborative research and development project on "Enriching Students' Learning Experience in Science through Incorporating Elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) into School-based Curriculum" embarked on by the Curriculum Development Institute of the Education and Manpower Bureau. It was held on July 29, 2003. About thirty Secondary 4 and 6 students participated in research activities related to analytical chemical analysis of TCM held in our Department.
