  1. Popular Science Talks

This is another undertaking in our outreach programme which was started in 1992/93. The Faculty sends our teachers on a regular basis to secondary schools, and external organizations such as Hong Kong Science Museum to deliver popular science lectures to students and the general public. The 2009/2010 series of talks offer 40 topics of interest with topics from various branches of biological and physical sciences, such as "Global Warming: Its Challenges and Solutions", "Lasers: Principles and Applications", and "Gene Therapy - from Laboratory to Clinical Applications".

  2. Lau Oi Wah Memorial Science Lecture Series

In memory of the late Professor Lau Oi Wah, a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and our former Dean of Science (1994-2003), for her life-long devotion of promoting science education in the University and high schools, the Faculty launched the Lau Oi Wah Memorial Science Lecture Series in 2005, and hoped that this could become an annual event to carry on with Professor Lau’s concerns in science education.

  3. A Science Enrichment Programme for Secondary 3-4 students

The Science Enrichment Programme is supported by the Quality Education Fund. It is a three-phase programme for Secondary 3 students who exhibit high passion and capability in science. The programme provides students with opportunities to explore and develop their higher order thinking skills, creativity and personal-social competences. It covers a series of learning and training activities in Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Mathematical Sciences. The activities are designed to nurture students' multiple intelligences and to foster their all-round development in sciences.

  4. Iron Man of Science Competition

The Faculty first launched the Iron Man of Science Competition in the summer of 1999. 80 secondary school students were invited to participate in the pilot programme, many of whom expressed support for the project to be carried out as an annual event. This attests to the popularity of the event among Hong Kong secondary school students. The competition also attracted sponsorships from public companies including CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd. and Hong Kong Yakult Co. Ltd.

  5. Summer Science Programme 科學領袖營

The first Summer Science Programme was held from 18-21 July 2006. Two hundred 12-15 years students participated in this event. The goals of this event are to bring science to life, create a passion for learning science among students and to allow young students to learn in a relaxed and playful environment. Participants will spend 4 days and 3 night in a quest to find solutions to mental quizzes, physical challenges, participate science workshops and talks, hands-on experiments, group activities etc.

  6. Pilot Science Research Programmes for Secondary School Students in 2001-2002

This novel Programme was held 2002 at the CUHK. It aims at providing secondary school science students with essential and updated knowledge in life and physical sciences as well as general science and research methodology through lectures, practicals, information technology and face-to-face discussions with expert researchers. The purpose of the Programme is to arouse students’ interest and to further their understanding of new developments in science by participating in an authentic research environment. 90 students were selected from over 200 applicants in the Phase I and only 20 students, with satisfactory performance in the Phase I, were selected for the Phase II where they worked on the following 6 research projects:

    1. The Study of Quantum-based Photonic Materials
    2. The Studies of Three Bodies Motion
    3. Establishment of a Web-based Bioinformatics Learning Centre for Secondary School Students
    4. Do Hong Kong obese and healthier-weight primary students have healthy lifestyles?
    5. Determination of selected heavy metals in seafoods
    6. Studies of Heavy Metals Content in Chinese Medicinal Herbs

A closing ceremony, where participants in the Phase II presented their project, all participants and parents were held at the end of the Programme.
