  1. "A Prelude to Advanced Mathematics: An Enrichment Learning Programme for Secondary School Teachers and Students" in 2000

A webcasted public talk titled "Mathematics of the Internet" was co-organized with the Hong Kong Education City. In this talk, Prof. S.T. Yau talked about the application on mathematics in internet. Topics included data compression, traffic flow, cryptography and watermarking.

  2. The Mathematics Department and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences jointly launched the "Enrichment Programme for Young Mathematics Talents" since 2002  http://www.math.cuhk.edu.hk/epymt/

The Department and the IMS have co-sponsored the Enrichment Programme for Young Mathematics Talents (EPYMT). It is designed for the higher form pre-university students who have exceptional interest and ability in mathematics. The materials are more challenging than the high school curriculum; students are encouraged to explore the subject matter by themselves. Also there is an expository lecture series by distinguished advisors to ignite students' interest. The programme is to have three terms year round; the students will gain university credits from the programme, 2 in each term.

  3. The Mathematics Department held the "New Wave Mathematics public lectures" every year  http://www.math.cuhk.edu.hk/en/publect/index.html

Since 1994, the Department has organized regularly public mathematics events called New Wave Mathematics. This is a series of lectures to publicize the interesting topics of mathematics that are related to computation. Our aim is to let high school students to see and experience the marvelous development in mathematics. The talks will report to the high school students in elementary terms on the recent advances of the beautiful interactions of mathematical theories and high speed computations and their important applications to the society. The total audience (mostly secondary school students and teachers) is amount to 6,000.

  4. Joint Workshops on "IT with Applications in Mathematics Teaching" in 1999

The Department organized 3 one-day workshops for various sections of Education Department at their request. The workshops aim to arouse the interest of teachers in applying commercial software to prepare teaching materials for mathematics. By this, the teaching effectiveness will be enhanced and students are more motivated.
