Enrichment Mathematics will admit students
via a programme-based admission scheme. It is
specially meant for students who wish to develop a
deeper understanding of mathematical theories. This
programme is also suitable for students intending to
pursue higher studies as it helps students to consolidate
a strong mathematics foundation for doing academic
research. Under this programme, students will be able to
complete the required foundation subjects earlier, and
will spend more time on mathematically sophisticated
subjects. In the area of pure mathematics, the offered
topics include number theory, abstract algebra, real
and complex analysis, functional analysis, differential
geometry, topology and differential equations. In the
area of applied mathematics, the offered topics include
probability, financial mathematics, operations research
and logistics, optimisation theory, game theory, coding
theory and cryptography and numerical analysis.
Competent students can also take graduate courses. At
graduation, students will have gained wide and deep
mathematical knowledge, and will be able to take up
jobs which require strong knowledge and abilities in After finishing the first year of study in the programme, students with satisfactory performance can switch to “Mathematics and Information Engineering”. Mathematics and Information Engineering (MIEG) is an interdisciplinary single-degree programme, specially meant for students who have strong interests in both mathematics and information technology. Upon graduation, students can choose to work in areas related to mathematics or information engineering such as quantitative analysis in finance and banking industry, information management and network systems, security protection and systems management. Students can also choose to embark on further studies in either of these options and engage in research work in these areas. This programme is jointly offered by the Department of Information Engineering and Department of Mathematics. Students can study this programme through one of the following ways. (1) After applied and
finished the first year of “Enrichment Mathematics”, switch to
“Mathematics and Information Engineering” from the second
undergraduate year.
