1. Doctor of Philosophy programme

For the Doctor of Philosophy programme the applicant shall have:

1. a Master’s degree from a recognized university; or 2. a Bachelor's degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above, and have been registered in a course of study for a Master's degree at this University for at least one year and have demonstrated research ability; or 3. been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognized university for at least one year, and have been approved for admission by the Graduate Council; or 4. obtained the degrees of MBChB, or equivalent, or under special circumstances, the degree of Bachelor, for admission to programmes of the Faculty of Medicine.

2. Doctor of Philosophy stream under the "MPhil-PhD Programmes"

For the Doctor of Philosophy stream under the "MPhil-PhD Programmes", the applicant shall have:

1. a Master's degree from a recognized university; or
2. graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
3. graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" in undergraduate courses; or
4. completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

3. Master's programme other than the Executive MBA programme

For a Master's programme other than the Executive MBA programme, the applicant shall have:

1. graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor's degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
2. graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor's degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than "B" in undergraduate courses; or
3. completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

Chemistry
     Applicants for PhD programme, may be required to sit for GRE if they do not possess a Master’s degree in Chemistry.
Physics
     Applicants for PhD stream should submit result of GRE subject test in Physics
Materials Science and Engineering
     Applicants for PhD stream should submit result of GRE subject test in Physics, Chemistry or related subject.

5. English Language Proficiency Requirement

English Language Proficiency Requirement

•           Possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:
- Hong Kong Advanced Level Exam. (AS Level);
- Hong Kong Higher Level Exam;
- CUHK Matriculation Exam; or
•           Have a degree from a university in Hong Kong or an English speaking country; or
•           Submit one of the following scores for assessment by the programmes concerned:
- TOEFL;
- GMAT (Verbal);
- College English Test (CET) of PRC;
- IELTS (Academic); or
•      Have obtained a recognized professional qualification awarded in Hong Kong or an English speaking country.
