Congratulation to Ms.
CHIU Wing Yin Rebecca, Mr. LEE Chi Wo Daniel and Ms. PAU Ming Wai
Akina on their sporting success in the Doha Asian Games
The Hong Kong Team achieved
the best results in its history in the Doha Asian Games. Among them,
three are alumni of the Department of Sports Science and Physical
Education. Ms. CHIU Wing Yin Rebecca won a silver Medal in singles
squash, Mr. LEE Chi Wo won a silver medal in Triathlon, and Ms. PAU
Ming Wai Akina won a bronze medal in Women's saber team competition.
Hong Kong ace Rebecca Chiu is a professional squash player and is
one of the few locally trained professional athletes with international
ranking who has won a silver medal at the 2006 Asian Games. Mr. Daniel
Lee was the only Chinese triathlete qualified to compete in the Sydney
Olympic Games in 2004. He won a silver medal in Doha and his next
target will be the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games. Ms. Akina Pau
is a fencer who won a bronze medal in the Women's sabre team competition
on the same occasion.
A celebration reception, initiated by the Faculty of Education, The
Chinese University of Hong Kong, was held on January 12, 2007 in order
to congratulate the athletes on their brilliant achievements in the
Doha Asian Games. At the celebration reception, the Acting Vice-chancellor
Prof. Kenneth Young extended his heartfelt congratulations to these
medal winners. On behalf of the Faculty, the Dean presented the souvenirs
to these outstanding alumni. The Department of Sports Science and
Physical Education has also presented a scholarship of $80,000 to
Mr. Lee and Ms. Pau, which is to cover the tuition fee of the CUHK
taught master's degree programme. The three SPE alumni also donated
their sport uniforms (Chiu and Lee) and a weapon (Pau) used in international
competitions to the University. All faculty members and students shared
