This
course is a survey of the history of the Hebrew people
from the times of the Patriarchs
to the beginning of the Christian era within the context
of the ancient Near Eastern world.
This historical survey will also introduce students
to the life and faith and literature of the
Hebrew people. Throughout this course students will
be expected to be familiar with the
contents of the Chinese or English Bible.

This
course aims at an in-depth exegetical analysis and
literary interpretation of five brief
writings in the Hebrew Scripture. Though diverse in content
they are grouped together as
the Megilloth (scrolls) and tradition has it that they
are read publicly at the five great Jewish festivals:
1) The Book of Ruth at Pentacost; 2) The Song of Songs
at Passover; 3) Ecclesiastes
at Tabernacles; 4) Lamentation at the commemoration of
the destruction of Jerusalem,
587BCE; and 5) The Book of Esther at Purim. The literary
as well as religious values of the
books will be underlined in this course. |

Through
instructions and discussion, students are given guidance
in their composing and
delivery of sermons. Special emphasis will be given to
Biblical exposition, progression of
thoughts, flow of feelings, use of illustrations, relevancy,
and deliver styles. Critiques,
suggestions, or comments by the instructor and interaction
in a small group will be facilitated.
Each student is expected to deliver a full-length sermon
in front of other students two to
three times a semester and hand in the relevant scripts
at the same time. Prerequisite:

course will cover classical as well as modern psychological,
social and cultural theories
of religion. These theories will be brought together
around the cultural, social, individual
contexts out of which they were formulated. Special attention
is given to the religious
(visional) dimension envisioned in and effected upon
these social scientific studies of
religion. In addition, readings will relate methodology
in the hermeneutical study of religion
to the human sciences. Students are expected to become
informed about the interplay between
humanistic and social scientific methods of study that
are becoming emphasized in the

Mesopotamia
is one of the origins of human civilization. It embodies
the human heritage
of primeval, or early historical experiences inscribed
in myths and cultural-religious thought.
In order to appreciate better the traditions and concepts
preserved in the literary texts of both cultures, this
course attempts to study relevant documents from
this area with emphasis
placed on the history, myth, ritual, cosmology, religion
and culture.

course introduce students to the history of interaction
between Christianity and cultural
contexts. It focuses on the cross-cultural process of
Christianity and the diversity of its
manifestations in different cultures. Special references
will be given to the paradigm shifts
of Christianity from a Jewish Apocalyptic sect to a Hellenistic
state religion of the Roman
Empire, from Medieval Christendom to one of the religions
in a modernized state, and
from a Western religion to a global religion. (Not for

This
course aims at developing students’ ability to read
a Chinese Buddhist text in depth.
The first part of this course will be dedicated to a
study of some recent models of textual
studies in the field of Chinese Buddhism. The second
part of this course will be devoted to
an analysis of a text chosen from the Chinese Buddhist
canon. The text will be studied
critically through a historical analysis of the circumstances
surrounding the creation and
dissemination of the text. The choice of text will be
based on the interest of the students but
it will be chosen among some of the most representative
traditions of Chinese Buddhism
such as the Chan, the Tiantai, or the Huayen School of
Buddhism.

course aims at a study of pilgrim’s journey in different
religious traditions, including
Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Daoism and popular Chinese
religions. It will focus upon
how experiences of sacred site and sacred time will generate
meanings that affect individual
enlightenment as well as cultural transformation. As
a comparative approach to pilgrimages,
this course will cover materials such as myths, legends,
architecture, texts, and reports of
pilgrim’s journey.

The
aim of this course is to introduce students to the
Taoist literature in Chinese history.
While there are many approaches to the understanding
of the discipline of religion and
literature, this course covers traditional Chinese literature
in relation to Taoist thought,
practice, institution, and symbolism. The focus is on
the formation of literary genres as
religious expression and transcendental imagination in
the context, as much as possible, of the development of
Taoist religion. This will allow us no only to realize
literature as the
principal record of Taoist tradition in its confirmation
and valorization of Taoist values, but
also to grapple with the literary challenge to inherited
orthodoxies and thus the undermining
of conventional ideas and feelings, as well as to sample
the texture of literature functioning
as an alternative or substitute for Taoism. In this way,
we can approach the intersections of
the aesthetic and the religious as the essential humanity
through the reading and analysis of
the Taoist dimensions of literature. |

This
course aims at an in-depth exegetical analysis
and literary interpretation of five brief
writings in the Hebrew Scripture. Though diverse
in content they are grouped together as
the Megilloth (scrolls) and tradition has it that
they are read publicly at the five great Jewish
festivals: 1) The Book of Ruth at Pentacost; 2) The
Song of Songs at Passover; 3) Ecclesiastes
at Tabernacles; 4) Lamentation at the commemoration
of the destruction of Jerusalem,
587BCE; and 5) The Book of Esther at Purim. The literary
as well as religious values of the
books will be underlined in this course.

This
course is a case study of religion and literature.
It is intended to introduce students to the religious
world reflected in the Chinese novel, Honglou Meng
红楼梦(The Red Chamber Dream). The Red Chamber Dream
as the masterpiece work of Chinese literature epitomizes
Chinese culture, in which various religious traditions
play an important role. By reading this particular
novel, students will be exposed to the sophisticated
lyrical expression and attractive narrative in relation
to religious thought, practice, institution, and
symbolism. The focus is on the religious dimension
in the novel in that religions determine the framework,
characters, and meaning of the novel. With this understanding
of the role of religion in the novel, this course
will help students appreciate the greatness of the
literary work, decipher the touching human feelings
in the novel, and reconsider the relation between
religion and literary culture. (Not for students

course will be a general introduction to the phenonmenon

Buddhism
never ceases to undergo great changes and transformation
in complex modern society. New changes even challenge
conventional assumptions about the nature and direction
of Buddhism. The fourth Yanan Buddhism, more commonly
known as the socially engaged Buddhism, is a continuation
of the Buddhism in the human realm (renjian fojiao)
advocated by the Chinese scholar-monk Yin Shun. It
is exemplified by the Foguang shan movement and the
Tzu Chi Compassionate Relief Foundation of Taiwan.
It is also manifested in many other Asian local and
regional dharma organizations that struggle from
below for peace, justice, freedom, and environmental
sustainability. This course studies Buddhism and
contemporary life in the context of the above new
development of Buddhism. We seek to examine how Buddhism
is reinvented and reconceptualized to make it meaningful
for man and woman living in modern complex society
of the information age.

course of study in which topics relating either to
the context or work of ministering in the modern

issues, to define current issues in theological terms
