2004-05 United College Distinguished Visiting Scholar - Professor Michael C Corballis

Professor Michael C Corballis, Professor of Psychology, University of Auckland, New Zealand, will visit United College between 21 February and 3 March 2005 as the second Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2004-2005.

Professor Corballis was born in New Zealand¡¦s North Island.  He attended Victoria University College in Wellington where he gained a BSc and then MSc in mathematics, and then completed a second Master¡¦s degree in psychology at the University of Auckland. The award of a Commonwealth Scholarship took him to McGill University in Montreal Canada, where he completed a Ph.D. in 1965.  Professor Corballis immediately returned to Auckland as a Lecturer, only to go back to McGill in 1968, where he stayed for 10 years, rapidly advancing from Assistant Professor to Professor.  In 1978, he moved back to the University of Auckland as a Professor of Psychology, a position he has held to the present day.

Professor Corballis has been personally instrumental in the field of cognitive neuroscience.  In the 1960s, work on the ability of pigeons to perform discriminations between left and right led to an interest in differences between the left brain and the right brain, or cerebral asymmetry. After its avian beginnings, almost all this work was subsequently done on humans, both normals and so-called ¡§split-brain¡¨ patients whose cerebral hemispheres operate independently of each other due to damage to the corpus callosum.  Work on perception of left and right led him to the newly described phenomenon in imagery of mental rotation.  Other issues regarding the causes of cerebral asymmetry led him towards the study of evolutionary psychology, and the role of evolution in the most celebrated cognitive function for which the hemispheres are specialized, language.

Professor Corballis¡¦s career achievements of being a research leader rather than a follower, his focus on research quality rather than simple quantity (though with 241 peer-reviewed articles, including five authored books and nine articles in Psychological Review, he excels in both), and his capacity as a mentor to fellow researchers, faculty, and his students are qualities that we all do our best to emulate.

During his visit to United College, Professor Corballis will deliver two public lectures.  The details are as follows:

Lecture One:    Where did language come from?

                              Thursday, 24 February 2005, 4:30 p.m.

Lecture Two:    Why is our right brain different from our left   brain?

                      Tuesday, 1 March 2005, 4:30 p.m.

The lectures will be in English and held at Lecture Theatre C1, T C Cheng Building.  For further information, please contact Mr George Lam of United College on 2609-7598.
