Student Helpers Wanted

UC students interested in serving the College as student helpers may now register at the Dean of Students¡¦ Office. An award of HK$50 per hour will be given to student helpers.

Innovation and Entrepreneurial Project Award

First launched in 2004/05, the Innovation and Entrepreneurial Project Award was a great success. The Committee on Student Affairs and Development will continue this Award in 2005 ¡V 2006. The objective of the programe is to nurture the development of innovation potential and entrepreneurial skills among students of United College. It also aims to encourage students to invent and develop and translate innovative ideas into products and viable  business plans. Application forms and details of the award are available at the Dean of Students Office. The deadline of application is 15 October 2005.

Lockers for Non-resident Students

Lockers on Room 109 of Tsang Shiu Tim Building are now available for loan to non-residential students. Interested Students should apply in person during office hours at the UC Dean of Students¡¦ Office on 2/F of the Tsang Shiu Tim Building on or before 30 September 2005. Since only a limited number of lockers will be available, loan requests from hostel residents or students who have been assigned lockers in their respective departments will not be entertained.

The loan regulations are as follows:

1. A deposit of HK$50 per locker is required. Applicants should pay the deposit at any branch of Hang Seng Bank to: ¡§The Chinese

         University of Hong Kong¡¨ (293-005005-001). Please bring the bank pay-in slip when making the application.

2. The lockers must be kept clean at all times and no valuables should be kept inside lockers.

3. A locker may be on loan to a student up to 31 May of his/her year of graduation. However, the College may stop  the locker service by

         giving one month notice.

4. Before returning the locker to the College, a student is responsible for cleaning the locker and return the key in person at the UC  Dean of Students¡¦ Office.  Deposit will be refunded  through autopay.

5. Deposit will be forfeited if the locker key is lost. If the  student wants to continue to use the locker, he/she has to apply and pay the  

         deposit again.

6.     Failure to return the locker keys upon the expiry of the loan period will result in the deposit being forfeited. Articles inside the locker

        will be treated as found properties.

Language Improvement Project - Autumn 2005

 

The 2005 Autumn courses of the College¡¦s Language Improvement Project (LIP) are open for application from 5 to 17 September 2005. To cater for the needs of different students, the college will offer daytime Putonghua courses this year with priority being given to non-resident students. The programme prospectus and application forms can be obtained from the Dean of Students¡¦ Office.

United College Toastmasters Club

United College Toastmasters Club will be chartered with the Toastmasters International in September 2005. United College Toastmasters Club is the second chartered Toastmasters Club in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with the aim to promote  English speaking skills and standard among United College students. The motto of the Club is 'Take the Stage, Speak your world'.

At Toastmasters meetings, members have the opportunely to learn by speaking in groups and working with others in a supportive environment. Members receive trainings on impromptu speaking, public speaking and presentation, and effective listening and leadership through practice as well as the aid of structured training manuals and feedback from their fellow club members.

A demonstration meeting for recruiting new members will be held on 15 September 2005 6:45pm at Choi Koon Shum General Education Resource Centre, 4/F Tsang Shiu Tim Building. Experienced toastmasters will be present to give coaching on proper public speaking skills.

Apart from this, the Inauguration Ceremony of the Club will be held on 24 September 2005 2:30pm at Adam Schall Hall.
