書院多元文化校園願景

由書院學生事務及發展委員會倡議及討論近一年的「多元文化校園願景」文件經已獲院務委員會通過。文件內容如下：

願景

聯合書院致力創造及提供一個校園，讓不同社會文化背景的人士，能夠增加對不同文化的了解、從而作出貢獻及發揮個人潛能，並共同建造一個包容、和諧的書院社區。

使命

書院致力：

- 創造及發展一套重視多元化的理念和校園文化 - 主動鼓勵及促進多元化的校園文化

- 支持將多樣化方式融入書院生活

- 令書院成員及非書院成員在組織上及社會生活上均可達致融和

該委員會並於十月四日的會議上成立工作小組，為推動書院多元文化獻策。小組召集人為管理學系區玉輝教授。

United College adopts the Vision Statement for a Multicultural Campus

A vision statement on multicultural campus has been drafted by the Committee on Student Affairs and Development, and later endorsed by the Assembly of Fellows.  The contents are as follows:

 Vision

United College strives to create and provide for a campus in which people of different socio-cultural backgrounds can increase cultural understanding, contribute and achieve their full potential, and play a part in building an inclusive, harmonious society.

Missions

The college will strive to:

- create and develop a mindset and culture that value diversity

- encourage initiatives that increase cultural diversity on campus

- support multiple ways of adaptation to college life

- achieve full structural and social inclusion of members and non-members

In the meeting held on 4 October 2005, the Committee set up a taskforce to make recommendations on the promotion of multicultural strategies and plans on the United College campus . Professor Kevin Au from the Department of Management has been appointed as convenor of the taskforce. 

聯合書院四十九周年院慶典禮

書院四十九周年院慶典禮訂於十月二十一日上午十一時卅分假大學邵逸夫堂舉行。書院校董會主席岑才生先生及香港中文大學法律學院執行委員會主席楊鐵樑爵士將擔任主禮嘉賓，並致勉辭及頒授書院獎學金。

典禮後，書院隨即於聯合校園舉行院慶生日會。書院教職員聯誼會將送出生日大蛋糕致賀。生日會後，於張祝珊師生康樂大樓頂樓文怡閣舉行院慶午餐。為慶祝院慶，書院學生會亦將舉辦一連串的慶祝活動，詳情見附件四。

院慶為書院一年一度之盛事，歡迎聯合師生踴躍出席各項活動。如有查詢，請致電2609 8655與學生輔導處周鍾寶華女士聯絡。

49^th Anniversary Ceremony

The 49^th Anniversary Ceremony of United College will be held on Friday, 21 October 2005 at 11:30am at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Mr Shum Choi Sang, SBS, JP, Chairman of the United College Board of Trustees and Dr the Honourable Sir T L Yang, GBM, JP, Chairman of the Executive Committee of The School of Law, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, will officiate at the Ceremony and present College scholarships.

A birthday party will be held on the College campus after the ceremony. The College Staff Association will present a birthday cake for the party. The day’s highlight will be the Anniversary Luncheon to be held at the College Staff Common Room at 1:15pm. The Student Union has also organized a series of activities to celebrate the occasion. Please refer to Appendix 4 for details.

聯合書院五十周年院慶標誌設計比賽

50^th Anniversary Logo Design Competition

United College will celebrate its 50^th Anniversary in 2006-2007, a logo design competition is being organized by to mark this special anniversary. 二零零五至零六年度聯合書院「到訪傑出學人」Stanley N Cohen教授

聯合書院二零零五至二零零六年度首位「到訪傑出學人」為Stanley N Cohen教授，他將於十月卅一日至十一月六日到訪書院。

Cohen教授於一九三五年在美國新澤西州佩思安保(Perth Amboy)出生，並在該鎮居住直到中學畢業，他隨即入讀Rutgers University的醫科先修學系，並於一九六零年取得賓夕法尼亞大學醫學博士學位。及後，他於美國國家衛生研究所(U.S. National Institute of Health)及紐約Albert Einstein College of Medicine進行博士後研究，並於一九六八年開始在史丹福大學任教，現職該校醫學院李國鼎遺傳學講座教授及醫學講座教授。

Cohen教授現時的研究興趣包括控制核糖核酸(RNA) 衰變及在細胞演化過程中核糖核酸分解的機理。高恩教授的出版著作超過三百一十篇，獲得的獎項及榮譽多不勝數，其中包括美國國家科學及技科獎章、拉斯克基礎醫學研究獎(Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research)、沃爾夫醫學獎(Wolf Prize in Medicine)、Helmut基金研究獎、’Institut de la Vie獎、勒梅爾森獎(Lemelson-MIT Prize)、美國專利商標局的全國發明家名人堂(National Inventors Hall of Fame)入選人、阿爾巴尼醫學中心獎(Albany Medical Center Prize)及邵逸夫生命科學及醫學獎等。他是美國國家科學院成員及遺傳組前任主席、美國國家科學院醫學研究所成員及美國藝術與科學院院士。高恩教授更曾獲得Rutgers University及賓夕法尼亞大學頒授榮譽博士學位。

Cohen教授是次訪問期間將主持兩次公開講座，講題及詳情如下：

 第一講： 知識的追求與恐懼：新遺傳學帶來的兩極影

                   (Knowledge and Fear of Knowledge: Dual Legacies of the New Genetics)   

           十一月一日(星期二)下午四時卅分

第二講:   尋找及抑制被傳染性微生物利用的宿主細胞基因

          (Discovering and Inactivating Host Cell Genes Exploited by Infectious Microbes)

          十一月三日(星期四)下午四時卅分

2005-06 United College Distinguished Visiting Scholar – Professor Stanley N Cohen

Professor Stanley N Cohen, Stanford University, USA will visit United College between 31 October and 6 November 2005 as the College’s first Distinguished Visiting Scholar of 2005-2006.

Professor Cohen was born in 1935 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey and lived there until graduation from high school. He attended Rutgers University for pre-medical studies and received his doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1960.  He then received postdoctoral training at the U.S. National Institute of Health, and after further research training at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he joined the Stanford University faculty in 1968. Professor Cohen currently is the Kwoh-Ting Li Professor of Genetics and Professor of Medicine in that institution.

Professor Cohen’s current research interests include elucidation of mechanisms that govern RNA decay and lead to changes in RNA degradation during morphological and biochemical differentiation of cells. Professor Cohen is the author of more than 310 scientific publications and the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the National Medal of Science, the National Medal of Technology, the Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, the Wolf Prize in Medicine, the Research Award of the Helmut Horte Foundation, the Prix de I’Institut de la Vie, the Lemelson-MIT Prize, induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research, and the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and a past Chairman of its Genetics Section. He is also a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  He has received Sc.D. honoris causa degrees from Rutgers University and the University of Pennsylvania.

During his visit to United College, Professor Cohen will deliver two public lectures. The details are as follows:

Lecture One:  Knowledge and Fear of Knowledge: Dual Legacies of the New Genetic

                        Tuesday, 1 November 2005, 4:30pm

Lecture Two:  Discovering and Inactivating Host Cell Genes Exploited by Infections Microbes

                       Thursday, 3 November 2005, 4:30pm

書院院務委員會消息

院務委員會於二零零五年九月二十三日舉行的第九十二次會議上，通過以下各項屬下各項任命：

1.  書院導師

     續任陳燿武先生及黃鉅鴻先生為書院導師，任期由二零零五年十月二日至二零零六年十月一日。

2.  二零零五至二零零六年度學系聯絡人

     委任沈劍剛教授為中醫學院學系聯絡人，任期由二零零五年十一月一日至二零零六年七月三十一日。

3.  學生代表

      委任兩名學生代表，任期由二零零五年七月五日至二零零六年二月二十八日。

News of the College Assembly of Fellows

The College Assembly of Fellows, at its 92^nd Meeting held on 23 September 2005, approved the following appointments:

 1.  College Tutors

      Re-appointment of Mr Chan Yiu Mo and Mr Wong Kui Hung as College Tutors from 2 October 2005 to 1 October 2006.

 2.  College Coordinator 2005/2006

      Appointment of Professor Shen Jiangang as Departmental Coordinator for the School of Chinese Medicine from 1 November 2005 to 31 July 2006.

 3.  Student Representatives

      Two student representative appointments from 5 July 2005  – 28 February 2005.
